I wonder what the largest contiguous piece of privately owned property is? I think it used to be the King Ranch but that was before Ted Turner went on his buying spree.

Who the hell could keep all that land really private??? I mean some of, if not a large portion of those properties probably make for great hunting. What's stopping the outlaws who run wild looking for a free hunting trip?

I don't know about the really big ones but I know The King Ranch runs a pretty tight ship and poachers know it. Its still the wild west rules at The King Ranch.

Crap, I'm going to have enough fun "managing" the 0.479614325 acres we're about to own as of next Tuesday. But unlike Ted, I can brag that I'm about to double my holdings. FWIW, while you can't hunt his land here in MT, I have fished right up through his property and pissed on his fence posts. (As long as you stay below the high water mark, you can fish any stream in the state).

You can hunt his land if you pay enough. But if you have to ask, you can't afford it. He also pays guys to ride his land during hunting season, and if you even touch his land, they will be on you like flies on crap.
As for his land management, I know his managers get paid big bucks for it, and they do a good job. I have flown over his stuff here around Bozeman several times (he looked really pissed of when we flew over his house and private pond and waved at him). He has some huge elk on his place, and it was impressive to see the buffalo herd moving to water. I will say that those are the straightest and best maintained fences I have ever seen. Some places you had to look twice to see them because it looked like a hair on the ground. Can't fault his care of his land, but I can't stand the guy. I have heard he is the largest land owner in Montana (private). Anyway, I try to stay away from his place hunting because it is such a hassle if you get too close.

I personaly don't agree with land ownership. I believe we inhabit this planet not own it. I think everyone has an equal right to use the land in which we occupy. I love hunting but it has become very difficult to find hunting grounds because someone "owns" most of the land. I would love to have lived before land ownership. Roam the land free like we were born to do. It's not natural to be a slave to commerce nor is it what we were meant to do. Furthermore it's rediculous for people to own millions of acres or have billions of dollars, think about it for a minute, what would you do with a million acres or a billion dollars ? never use it all that's for sure. It's the greed of wanting more in thoughts of it making us happier that has put this country where it is now. Power is nothing more then greed to me. We are all equal and should have an equal right to the lands in which we "inhabit".

I have hunted several times on Ted Turner's Flying D Ranch. He used to open it up to cow elk tag holders at the end of the season. He hasn't opened it for the past couple seasons because idiots were reeking havoc driving off-road and such. It's a shame. It was a fun hunt, even if it was antlerless only. You always got to see some big (360 plus) bulls. He also has a huge population of bison. They say he has more than Yellowstone.
Like Helo said you can still hunt there if you have the funds. They do take some good ones off of there: http://www.arnaudoutfitting.com/ |

Actually, it's not socialist. If it was, he would believe in collective ownership. Sounds like more of a naive, anarchistic philosophy to me. As much as most of us hate lawyers, laws and ownership (of land and property) is part of the sound basis of our society. Would anyone be willing to put improvements into a house if they didn't have legal title to it? So it's silly to be against land ownership, large or small.
However, I will agree that there's a point where you have to wonder how much land and how much money can one person need or use? Ted Turner, of course, is trying to conserve and preserve the land he has acquired around the world. You may not agree with his approach, but it's fair to say that he didn't just buy it all to hog to himself. I admire people who have billions of dollars (Buffett, Gates, etc.) that are turning around and using it for charitable purposes. That's their right but they aren't forced to do it. And that is the difference.
Funny thing, I just heard a Tolstoy story (he was a socialist, but not a commie) the other day: How Much Land Does a Man Need? : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Much_Land_Does_a_Man_Need%3F
It's worth a read, if just for the clever ending...might make you think.

I do not believe in liberalism, socialism, anarchy or people that think that way of life works.
This country is unique in that everyone has the right to an equal life but you are not GUARANTEED equality. I believe that all man are NOT created equal in this country, but rather have the equal chance to get up and do something with their lives. The founders did not believe in equal ownership or equal shares between citizens. Welfare, handouts and giving the ability for people to sit on their asses and actually live a decent life is despicable in my opinion. Obama and people with like minded views should take a lesson in history. I don't care if you believe in marxism or socialism. It doesn't work. It never has in civilization and it never will. Our country is getting further and further away from what made it GREAT! Obama knows that bankrupting this country (which is where we are headed) will leave us only one choice. Federal takeover of all aspects of the country. And wow, how about looking at the past 2 years. Obama has geared up takeover of health care, the auto industry and large portions of the financial sector, all while spending more than Bush did in 8 years. Yup, that is exactly what America was founded on. Edited by shooter07 - October/19/2010 at 10:09 |

BTW
Socialism refers to the various theories of economic organization which advocate either public or direct worker ownership and administration of the means of production and allocation of resources.
As I said I don't believe ANYONE should own land. Not goverment not people not ANYONE.

But if no one owns anything, then by that theory any person who wished could enter my house un-invited? The problem i see here, is infrastructure is on land and if no one owns the land than people are free to roam into any place they choose?
I respect what you believe and i agree that i think it's unnecessary for one man to own millions of acres but i think it's a bit far fetched for reality. |

If no one owned anything you wouldn't own a home. But I'll agree, to say owning nothing is going a bit far. But what gives you right to own land (or anything naturally occuring to that land) ? I don't see it as bieng far fetched, the indians lived here without ownership of land. I see no reason why you couldn't put a house on an open piece of land for safety from the elements, however this should not give you ownership of the land it occupies, just the home itself. It's rediculous to me that anyone can say hey, this land belongs to me and you are not allowed on it. What happens if we occupy another planet ? Does the first country to inhabit it take ownership of it ? Thats just absurd.

If the Indians didn't "own" land why did the fight so much amongst them selves and with the Settlers westward expansion? I am ok with your opinion, but your wrong about the Indians not being territorial. All humans are, throughout history.
