As some of you may know, the South Korean government has recently made a decision to surplus M1 Garands and carbines that were originally supplied to it by the United States. Unfortunately, the Clinton State Department has blocked the import of these rifles, ignoring that they have been widely available via the CMP and others for years. Many of the rifles CMP has sold, including the one I own, were returned by the Greek government earlier this decade. So it's not like there isn't precedent for a foreign country to repatriate American-made firearms.

Montana's congressional delegation ( comprised of two Democrat Senators and one Republican Representative) have written to Hillary Clinton complaining about the decision. Senator Tester will  introduce legislation to allow the return of M1 Garands and carbines to the U.S. Representative Rehberg will introduce similar legislation in the House (http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-and-regional/montana/article_0d60f69e-cd71-11df-a4fb-001cc4c03286.html). I encourage you to contact your representatives and ask them to support this effort.

Frankly, it's not in the best interest of any current M1 owner to support increasing the supply of these rifles. However, as anyone who has owned one or even shot one can attest, the rifles themselves, their service history, the man and the industrial process that created them are a monument to American ingenuity and manufacturing know-how. (Well, since Garand was originally Canadian, I'll give them so credit as well). I think that anyone that can should be given the chance to own one.

I'd support that and there have been informal programs, such as "M1s for Vets" but it would probably be very difficult for the CMP to do that. The initials after all, stand for "Civilian Marksmanship Program" and that is their charter.
