well i finally got to shoot my .300wby today, and the circled group was the second group i shot. 74gr of imr-4831 and a 180gr sierra prohunter. the target and the scan aren't the greatest, but its what i have work with.

Looks like it's a shooter. On a side note that's kinda a mild load for that Roy isn't it ?

yeah thats what is sorta depressing, i tried all of the heaviest loads i loaded up except one, and none of them shot anywhere close to that group of three. its right in that 2900fps mark.

Have you tried or sould I say are you going to try any H4831 ? Also, I think I read somewhere that Weatherby used to load that round with IMR-7828. Just a thought. You should be able to get 3100+ with 180's in the Roy.

i loaded up imr-4831 h-4831 h-1000 h-retumbo and imr7828, the 7828 is the only powder i didnt get a chance to shoot today. none of them grouped like that 74gr did, most were in the 1-1.5" range. though.

Just checked with what a "gunwriter recently said about the 300 Weatherby......

"

.300 Weatherby Magnum: The standard is a 180-

grain bullet and around 85.0 grains of IMR7828. This

combo generally gets 3100-3200 fps at the muzzle,

depending on barrel length.

i did shoot one group of h-1000, 89gr of it actually. it was noticeably louder and the recoil was stepped up. thankfully the lead sled works well. that 24" tube is a lot louder than the 26" tubes on my .375H&H and my .264win.

I was going to say maybe you should try some RL-22.  I shoot that in my 300 with great results.  I am pushing a 190 gr bullet about 3000 fps.

180gr sierras, i think they shot very well myself. this is the third different variation of a .300 ive owned and the other two shot that bullet very well also.

  I also agree with trying RL22.  My .300 has a bit less capacity than the Weatherby but my rifle also has a 24"bbl. The load I developed was with 180gr Hornady Interlock bullets which I was disappointed with on terminal performance(no fault of the bullet,just too much velocity for it)but was very accurate.
   75gr = 3097
   75.5 = 3118 (this matches Nosler #4 exactly,was very accurate,so it's my working load)
   76gr = 3140 (as you can see velocity is still increasing at a semetrical rate but due to possible
                         bullet stress I decided to stop here.)

   For the Weatherby,Nosler #4 shows a max load of 80gr of RL22 for 3132 out of a 26" pressure bbl with 180's.
  The top velocity and most accurate load was with 84.5gr of IMR7828 at a velocity of 3185 (96% load density).

I also use R-22 and 190gr hornady SPBT with great results, try some R-22.

rl22 is on my list, but i doubt any powder i try will produce a group that small. ive got loads from 76grs to 80gr on my list for rl22, rl25 is on my list as well, but i dont have any rl25.

But maybe it'll be close at higher velocity,

You were lucky to get a group like that with the bullet you wanted to shoot. I can't get anything under about 2" with the 180 gr. Gamekings that were going to be my "go to" deer bullet. But I can feed Silvia with anything 200 gr. and be golden. I would try the RL-22 though. I had good luck with that, and imr 7828. since I went to heavier bullets though, H-1000, and Retumbo have been my friend. I'm now pushing my 210 gr. custom bullet at 2980 fps with Retumbo.
