Greetings.  Hoping to get some expert advice from the knowledgeable folks at Opticstalk.  I'm pretty handy with a pistol and I'm better than average out to 500 yards with an open site rifle.  Maybe better than average is giving my self too much credit.  I qualified expert in the MC several times over eight years, high score being 234 (with a hangover).  Not sure how that translates to the real world.  Either way, I'm not new to firearms, just scopes and scoped rifles.  Just got a Tikka T3 Scout in .308, which as I found out is just the beginning of a long journey.  Started researching scopes about 10 days ago and I'm more confused  now than when I began.  The nearest range goes to 600 yards but I think the rifle is capable more than that.  I know the round is.  Want to get something that would theoretically cover the effective range of the .308.  Not because I'll be accurately shooting that far anytime soon, but because my wife isn't going to sign off on any more gear for awhile after she gets the bill for this rig w/accessories.  Want to keep the scope under $500 if possible.  Been looking mostly at the Burris FFII and Sig. Select, Weaver Grand and Super Slams, SWFA SS 10x42, Nikon Monarchs and Zeiss Conquest.  I started out wanting nothing but a Leupold but in my price range the others seem to offer more.  I'm sure that all of the scopes I've looked at would serve my purpose (and my limited abilities) nicely, I'd just like to get this right the first time, if possible.  (My definition of "right" is a scope that I won't hate for the two years it takes me to convince my wife it's time for an upgrade.  Thanks in advance.  I've always been fascinated by the beautiful precision of long range marksmanship and I can't wait to get started.

Mike, my vote is for SWFA either 10x42 or 16x42, and you'll still have plenty of cash left to purchase few boxes of high quality ammo. Of course, I am not an expert, but this scope is highly regarded by folks of ALL walks of life and for great reasons. I'd also look at Vortex. Sounds like you want glass that will last and the one that is backed up by a great warranty. The two I have mentioned have no problem with either one of these tasks...

First--THANK YOU for your service!!

Second is a question of my own that we need to know to better help you.

What is your purpose? Paper Punching? Hunting? Combo?

If you are just paper punching---SS 10x42

If you are hunting--Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40

Combo---I'd go with the Zeiss again.
Hope this helps and welcome to OT---Bboy623

For the money I think the ss x 10 would serve you well. For the money they are great. Hard to beat in that price range. If a fixed scope meets your needs that may be the way to go. They are rugged as hell. Hold their value well. The biggest thing is they are reliable in repeatability of windage and elevation adjustments. My SS was the first step up I took from really cheap scopes.

The only reason I will change my scope(SS x 16) in the near future is that I want a good variable so I will not be changing scopes when I hunt from when I target shoot. For that upgrade I will be waiting untill the SS 5 x 20 comes out. I will be a SS scope user for life.

Thanks for the quick replies.  Bboy, thanks but my service was 8 years peacetime (78-86) so I didn't do any heavy lifting.  Don't think it's fair to passively allow myself to get lumped in with people who actually put it on the line.  Yeah, meant to mention that I'll only be target shooting unless the SHTF.  Haven't looked at Vipers but I'll check them out.  SS is definitely on my short list.  Thanks.

For your purposes and with your budget, don't even consider anything else.

Mount it on a flat or 20MOa base and use TPS rings, you'll be all set.

Leupold sucks, good that you didn't venture down that path. (But, in Leupold's defense, WHEN their scopes break, you get them back fast!)

Thank you for your service.  I too served in our beloved Corps.  In many ways, I miss the monkey suit; and in others, not so much.

PM inbound.

If you can swing the extra money the ss 3-9 would be a good way to go.

Rocky and Bboy, appreciate your sentiments.  You're very generous for thanking me for doing something that I enjoyed a hell of a lot.  First time in my life that I felt I was exactly where I was supposed to be.  Rancid,  ditto on the Corps.  I miss it sometimes too.  My best buds are guys I met I met there 30+ years ago.  Great organization that saved me from a life of aimless meandering.  Also, the SS 3x9 sounds great.  Mil/Mil (why does anyone make Mil/MOA scopes?  Doesn't that complicate the whole process?), sturdy, FFP, which I don't claim to understand but I've read that it is preferable to SFP.  Have to talk to the wife.  She said to get what I want, but that never really means what it seems to.

Welcome to OT, and thanks for your service!  I will add a vote to the SS 3-9.  I love mine and wouldn't trade it.  Great glass and features.  I shoot out to 600 with mine (sits on a 270).  Great all around scope.

Its very easy to use.  See a hit measure it against the reticle, dial it in.  Its mil/mil so if you are 1 mil left and high dial in 1 mil right and down and the next should be on the money.  Bout as easy of a scope to use as you'll ever own.
