To each his own. I won't argue the point that has been beat to death around every online forum.

I have hunting deer and elk every season for the last 16 years and I have never used more than a 3-9x, 4x or a 1x scope.  I have never felt under scoped.  There have been a few times when I wish I would have a a 1x or 2x when using the 3-9x and the 4x, but never had a time when I wanted more than 9x.  I have killed both deer and elk at near 400 yards.  In all honesty sometimes I do not even like 9x because of the smaller field of view.  With the recoil of the rifle, it takes to long to get back on target.  I could not even imagine trying to use a 24x scope for big game hunting.

A 3-12x would be an excellent range.  Personally if I could choose any scope for hunting big game it would be a Swaro 1.7-10x42.  IMO that is the most useful range you could get for big game hunting.

I'm sure most of us could do fine with a fixed 6X but it sure is nice to have a low-end in the 2-3 range. I know I would have had a very hard time getting a shot off # 6X a couple years ago on an elk I jumped at 20 yards. She made it to 35 yards by the time I could get the rifle up and on her and that was with a 2.5X magnification.

What I like about going up to 15X (my highest) is that you can practice more effectively out @ longer ranges. Consider that if you're comfortable taking a shot on a target @ 600 yards, you will be much more comfortable shooting a live animal @ 300 yards.
Reaction time is a factor...

I ordered the FFP scope because I share your thouhgts about using 24x for hunting. I don´t think i will ever use them but the mrad-1 reticle will still be useful. The only situation where I plan to use those 24x is at the range. I do a lot of silhouette shooting (50-70 shots/month) and no one uses less than 20x for that this days. I´m planning to give a try on Prone Long Range Shooting and maybe that doesn´t require that much magnification. I sold my VX-III 8.5-25X50 to get this Viper, so I´m used to the high magnification for range shooting (never used this scope for hunting).

Huskemoo is an industry joke and rank right up there with Counter Sniper in regards to BS, self serving, smoke and mirror, marketing.

I've heard some pretty horrific things from people that have hunted some of the same ranches the show hunted.

Chris has some good advice above, I cannot imagine using that high power scope for a moving animal hunting. When I was hunting I usually carried my scope set on 2 1/2 or 4 power unless I was varmint hunting where I was stationary, like prairie dogs in western Ks  I do use a 24 power at the range and sometimes more but that is at stationary targets. To me 24 is too much for hunting and not quite enough for benchrest.

weren't they the ones that wanted you to put like 50% down and you'd get your scope built in a few months or something?

No, I most definitely did not fall in the Huskamaw crap.  I think it's a gimmick, and a poor one at that.  Nothing takes the place of practice, practice and more practice.  You can't buy marksmanship no matter how much you spend.

I have guided for a number of years now.  Some years full time (four months solid in the mountains), and some years just a couple weeks.  I have seen guys come in with fixed power, low power variable, mid range, and high mag.  The ones that killed the most elk were the ones that had fixed or mid range (3-9, 2.5-10,4-16) scopes.  The average range that the guys connected with was 150 yards.  Only once did I see a guy connect at over 350 yards.

If you ask me, most people can not and should not be taking "long range" shots.    The stats I have seen say stick to a close as you can get, and use a mid range scope.  Just my opinion based on what I have seen.

i know this really doesnt matter, but in theory the further you are from a given target the more variables that come into play that can greatly effect the end result.

those snipers in Afghanistan, they are lucky, can you imagine shooting somebody at 2miles?? the wind may be blowing across a 7 mph where you are shooting, but whats it doing where the target is?? point is that to me if its not inside of 300 odds arent as good as when the animal is 150yds.

The first thing I discovered with my first high magnification scope was how unsteady my 'steady' rest really was.
