Help for a newbie looking at bases and rings for my savage model 12 and I keep seeing short and long action options. Is this based on cartridge length? Mine is 22-250 but I think it's called a short action (I would have thought it's a long). Right now considering Leupold bases and rings for my Vortex 6.5-20X44. I'm guessing medium height should work?

Yes yours is most likely a short action. On Savages the model number tells you, if you have a 2 digit number,i.e. 10,11,12 ect. it is a short action. If a 3 digit no. i.e. 110,111,112 it is a long- action.

I would look at Talley light-weight one piece ring and mounts for that rifle.

Ok...next question. Besides weight saving (it's already pretty heavy), would steel be better for a target/varmint gun. I won't be packing it around so extra weight is not a big deal

Sure, if you want. The rings I recommended are really top notch, and not heavy at all.

Thanks for the advice...are the Talleys adjustable for windage?

Windage adjustable rings and bases are not reliable IMO. They tend to get broke or put to much stress on the scope tube. If you go with well manufactured bases and rings, you shouldn't have any windage problems.

With Talley's the only time I've heard of windage issues is when the mounting holes were misdrilled in the action.

Imperfect quality in drilling the holes happens more often than one would imagine... Divorces have occurred because of it.... |

But since the scope mentioned has target knobs, why take the chance?
