Seems their getting more common in the mid-atlantic states area.  Doc told my SIL(Warren)yesterday that he's 99% sure that Warrens got Lyme Disease.  Warren's next door neighbor also recently got some rare type of a tick borne disease. Poor ol'guy(in his 80's)has heart problems and had a liver transplant. Now this.
Be checking the family for ticks although Warren was told by his Doc that they've had to use a magnifier and tweezers to see and remove some.

Deer ticks are very hard to see. They are much smaller than the wood tick.
I have a friend who contracted Lyme disease over twenty five years ago. It was quite an ordeal. He had a stent put in because the antibiotics used back then were not very good. He developed a blockage from them.
Good luck for your SIL. It looks like modern treatments are very successful.

 THANKS,Doug.

Still basically the same treatment I reckon.  Started him on STRONG antibiotics that he was told will DEFINITELY give him diarrhea. Heading in for blood work today.

I don't have to worry about ticks, they don't like something about me and won't dig in/bite.
My skin has some sort of natural repellent in the sweat.
Fingers crossed for your SIL.

Have a friend up here that has Lymes.  Nasty stuff.  Hope things work out for your SIL soon.  I have only ever had one tick on me.  Nasty little things.

ticks are bad up here, the wood ticks are worse than the deer ticks, and they can make you sick too. anaplasmosis  is one illness you can get from wood ticks. i had a deer tick stuck to me in a bad place and my wife tried to remove it from said bad area and failed to get the head. needless to say i spent over and hour in the bathroom digging the head out of my body. not cool

 THANKS,guys.

Talked to him last evening and the anti's are starting to kick in.

NEVER heard of such a thing,AJ.  But I've never had a problem with them either even though living and working in the woods for 30+ yrs.

3yrs ago I had to go in for a heart stent & I was asked if I have ever had Lymes after the operation,I said yes back in 1989 when it first started out in Conn.My next question was why they asked, the answer was it is still showed up  in my blood work ups.Got to be very careful in the NE when in the woods,I always take my hunting clothes off after being in the woods & going into the house.

Ticks are horrible in NC woods.  I normally drench myself with some sort of Deet before i go into the woods for work, for hunting i do the same but more of the unsented stuff.  I have tested the spray on trees around piles and deer seem to not notice it so I still use it for my benefit.  Of course still with all that after every time i go in the woods i check myself very good.  I've pulled more ticks off me than i care to remember.

They carry diseases to of course but real problems are coming from the deer ticks.  Warren found a bump on his head about 2 wks ago but never thought of a tick because it couldn't be seen.  Some are VERY small.

Deet is a very poor tick repellent, almost noneffective.. it's for mosquitoes and some biting flies.

Permethrins are what is recommended for tick repellent and covers all the other biting thingy's as well... chiggers, flies, gnats, fleas, etc.

Permethrins are also truly odorless, unlike Deet, which no matter what you do to it always has an odor.  Permethrins actually KILL insects.  HOWEVER, they are for use on CLOTHES, NOT SKIN.

Picaridin can be sprayed on skin, is odorless (unlike Deet) and is effective against ticks, etc.

Both these products were developed in conjunction with the DoD.  They are effective against sand fleas, as well...
