Hey guys that have 30-06s or have hunted with them---what grain bullet is the best for whitetail? I'm torn between the 150gr and 180 gr. I'm leaning strongly toward the 150gr Remington Core Lokt. Wally has them and the 180gr, but had more of the 180gr. I bought the last box of 150gr today. Is that signifying that the 150gr is more popular? I just don't want to have the hunt for ammo (pun intended). I've always had good luck with the Remington Core lokts but welcome anyones PERSONAL experiences.---Bboy623

165 gr is probably one of the most popular in the -06. I would personally go with the 150 gr for a flatter trajectory. If I was hunting elk, then I would think more about the 180 gr. Either will kill them. It is all about shot placement.

150s are fine! If you roll your own get the 150 SST Hornady's.

I've used both 150gr and 180gr Swift A-Frame's for my (grandfather's
old) remmy 30.06. It seems shoot the 180gr best so that's what I use.
For most I'd say the 150gr is all you need. |

The 30-06 is one up from the 308 Win, so use that extra powder capacity and load at least 165 or 168gr. The Sierra gamekings has served me well.
In South Africa I eventually started loading 180gr for the bigger animals.
But nothing beats shot placement. A 100gr vital organ shot is better then a 200gr "missed the vitals" shot.

30-06 was my 'go to" rifle for many years. I like the 180's better, but used the 150's more. There was always more availability of the 150's in the Winchester Supreme Fail-Safe which is what I used almost exclusively in my 30-06's. I used 220gr quite a bit, mostly before my current "crop" of rifles, but they are tough to find, nowadays... once again I like the Winchesters (Super-X). Back when I loaded my own, I loaded 180 and 220 almost exclusively. I've used the Remington's and they are fine performers, never had a problem other than they are "dirtier" than the Winchester... my experience. Always had to clean more shooting Remington ammo.
I've never had a deer fail to fall with a 150gr bullet, so it is good for it's purpose. Plenty of speed, plenty of E, plenty...
Hit 'em good, they'll go down...

I like the 150 gr. for deer, and the 180 gr. for hog and bear.

Id say see which one gives you the best grouping and use those. However I agree that the 165 grain, or if you load your own the 168 grain would be a nice intermediate choice. You could also try the hornady light magnum in 165 grain witha velocity of 2950.

I also like the 165gr for the 06, but my abolt really groups the 180's so thats what I use.

I liked the 168 gr Ballistic Silvertip that Nosler made for Winchester. It performs well at 06 speeds, and was accurate in my rifles.

168gr bergers do a good job on deer also out of a 30-06.

150, 165, 180.
Any decent slug (Core-lokts are decent) in those weights out of an ought-6 is gonna do the trick on a whitetail. If those 150s shoot, then great. If not, try a few different brands and bullet weights to find what your rifle likes. That 110 grain barnes would be dynamite and shoot flat out of a 30-06. |
