Dear Members:
I intend to buy Mueller 4-16x50 Tactical rifle scope($220.00) for my HW80 air rifle. I like this one because the close focus down to 10 yards and offer 80 plus inches of windage adjustment along with 90 plus inches of elevation adjustment. Is there any member who has a better alternative to the above Tactical rifle scope? Thank you. |

You have a great German airgun that can punch through small game and pests with authority. Mine is in .22 and I have killed dozens and dozens of animals with it out to 80 yards. The scope you are asking about is junk. My first choice for this gun will be either Bushnell 3200 Elite 5-15x40 Tactical or one of the Hawkes. You will also need a one piece Beeman/Sportsmatch mount.

Air rifles are tough on scopes. That Bushnell VYD suggested is a good scope, but their customer service is spotty. Vortex makes some nice scopes and their customer support is very good. In the price range you are looking at I'd suggest the following. http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-12x40-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P11248.aspx I like the dot http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P43585.aspx Good scope for the money I own 2 http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-12x40-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P10820.aspx VERY nice scope for the money I've never owned a Mueller scope so can't give an opinion on it. I have had a bunch of Bushnell scopes and the last time I called their customer service I swore I'd never buy another product with Bushnell written on it. |

It's difficult to suggest since there is no price limit mentioned...but here is another good one: Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 with a ballistic reticle - light, robust, bright, and clear. I am sure you know that HW80/R1 is a heavy springer so choose the scope wisely. And of course, there is Leupold... |

+1 on the Timberline series. I have the 3-9 x 32 and love it. Mine is mounted on a Ruger mini-30 and has seen a few hundred rounds through it with no issues.

Dear VYD and neibilly:
Many thanks for your information. My concern are as follows: (1) I only shoot 10 meters(30 feet) in my basement for paper punching. The Close Focus of many scopes are not down to 30 ft. (2) Due to the fact that I only shoot 30 ft., many scopes are not designed to have sufficient Windage and Elevation adjustments, e.g. I bought an Alpen Kodiak 4-12X40 scope last month. The windage adjustment was not enough travel for me to hit the target. I have no choice to cut a deep lost to return the scope to the dealer. The Vortex Viper 4-12x40 seems good choice for $239.95. Is there anyone who has experience with Swift 3-9x40 model #SRP685M airgun-rated scope sell for $179.95? |

Tuner, that's strange, none of my airguns have problems with adjustments at 10 yards as long as it focuses down to that distance. As the matter of fact, two of my airguns are zeroed at 10 yards (first zero).

VYD: The focus on the previous Alpen Kodiak 4-12x40 was no problem down
to 10 yards, but the windage had not enough adjustments to hit the target. I need another 3 inches to the right in order to hit the target. Currently, my HW80 is using BSA 4-12x44. The good thing on BSA is a lot of elevation and windage adjustments provided for you. But the lens are not good enough. Also the target knobs seem wear out faster than I expected. |

If you are that off on the windage, there must be something wrong with your mounting system. It shouldn't happen at all. It's not normal when your scope is maxed out completely on the windage!

I'm with V on that one. Your mounts aren't right, or your scope is all wonky. What type of mount and rings do you have?

Hi, the rings are B-Square Air Sporter Ring Model #25020. I installed the
Alpen Kodiak 4-12x40 the same way as BSA. In deed, I have BSA first, when I received the Kodiak, I just removed the upper part of B-Square rings and put the Alpen on the old place. But compared the windage adjustments with BSA, it has lot more windage adjustments provided than the Alpen Kodiak. Besides, is there anyone who has experience on Swift Premier model SRP685M 3-9x40, airgun-rated rifle? Thank you in anticipation. |

If you are only shooting 30 ft.why do you need a variable? At that distance a 4X fixed would be plenty or go to a 1.5-4.or a SWFA SS 6X or Vortex Viper 2-7x32.

Dear stickbow46:
Good question. There are two reasons that I wish to buy a variable power scope: (1) At the present time, my targets are only red dots marked on a piece of white paper with smaller than white bean size by Sharpie Permanent Marker. My BSA 4-12X44 is now set at 9 power which I can shoot very comfortably to my old eyes. (2) The Government will voting to abolish long gun registration in the up coming September. If the law is passed, then I will buy rimfire rifle for shooting fun. I can interchange the scope between air/rimfire rifle. |

16 power on an airgun is a little overkill IMHO

I agreed, normally I only use 9 to 10 powers.
