Bought a Remington 798, in 375 H&H, at a Buckmaster Expo in Montgomery yesterday. Plan to use it on a hunt to Namibia next year. Last time I was in Africa I took a 308 and felt undergunned against some of the larger Plains Game. Probably could have moved up to 300 WSM but the price was too compelling on the 375 H&H. My question is simple. What is a solid durable scope to buy? I assume 99% of the shots would be under 300 yds. I would also like to stay under $1000. Thanks for any help.

Would be my recommendation as well. Anything that is a 1-2 on the low end for field of view and target acquisition for that application.

i dont know that i would want a fixed 6x scope in africa, to many things live there that want to stomp or eat you. i could see a good fixed 2.5x or 4x though. |

I like Pyro's picks and would add this one for versatility's sake (and a gloss finish):

I'm like a raccoon when it comes to shiny things.
But the truth is, ALL of my current personal scopes have matte finishes. If I ever get a 375 though, it will be glossy all over! |

Yeah, put a matte scope on that runway model, and you'll have plenty of that rifle karma you and Cyborg were waxing poetic about in the other thread, Pyro.

I´m in the same situation regarding a new scope for my 375 Ruger / Namibia next year.
Hope I can jump in on your tread?
As my years dvindle by, my eye sight change and my old trustworthy Leupold Vari X III 2,5-8x36 needs a replacement (been to Africa twice).
Not that it does not work, but the glass quality are not "up there" any more.
But the most frustraiting trait with Leupold is the change of eye relief from high to low magnification!
So far I have been looking at the Nikon Monarc Gold 1,5-6x42 (the most versatile size for a big game scope IMHO) and the new Zeiss Duralyt 2-8x42.
I want ample eye relief, good optical standard, low magnification for close work, and a bit more for longer range, preferably #4 reticle.

I am the proud new owner of a CZ550 in .375 H&H Mag. I'm seriously considering an Aimpoint for mine. Trajectory is pretty darn flat out to 400, ideal for an Aimpoint.

I wouldn't think you would want a scope, if you were unting dangerous game. If you are stalking the game and it all the sudden charges you your scope is not going to work so well. In my opinion 375 and up for big game in africa should be unscoped in case in charges you. I would also however take along a scoped rifle in say 300 win mag 338 for the bigger anetlope. Just my 2 cents. I grew up in Kenya and have seen all the big five up close. Which is how you mostly have to hunt them because if you have to get close to be able to kill them even with bigger guns. Even then they dont die sometimes. I really enjoy reading books on african big game hunting. Some good reads are
End of the Game by peter beard
The Golden Age of African Safaris by John Heard
Anything by J.A. Hunter and Capstic.
One story involves a cape buffalo shot several times with a 375 or maybe a 577 adn it didn't die and killed the hunter only to be put down by anothe hunter, with one arm wielding a 477 or something like that.
Another story involves JA shooting an elephant by jamming his gun in its mouth and pulling both triggers on his 500 express as it charged out of the brush at him.

I have a Kahles 1.1-4x24 on my M700 .375 H&H. I have never found myself wanting more scope on that gun. I also keep a 1.5-5x20 Leupold as a back up in Talley rings.
You can pick up a similar Swarovski on the Samplelist here for under $1K. These scopes would also be a good choice. http://www.samplelist.com/Riflescopes-C4.aspx#Swarovski

Should have been a little clearer about the intended use of the 375 H&H. Plan on using it for large African Plains game like Kudu and Eland. Last time I was there (2007) felt undergunned with a 30-06. Did a dangerous game hunt 30 years ago and there is a certain pucker factor involved with hunting Cape Buffalo and Rhino. Today, I am way too slow for dangerous game. I really appreciate the advice. Leaning toward Pyro6999' recommendation- Leopold 1.75-6X32mm Thanks again guys!

I can certainly identify with the gradually changing eyesight and trustworthy equipment that just doesn't match up to the new technology. Will this be your first trip to Namibia? It is for me. My prior experiences were in South Africa. I am looking forward to trying something new and I told Namibia is a very hunter friendly country.

Some sort of a 2-7x32 or similar is probably your best bet and the (recently discontinued, so the prices kick ass) Vortex Viper 2-7x32 is easily one of my favourite such scopes.
On the other hand, there is a lot to be sad about a good quality 4x32 scope. Unfortunately, there are not all that many top notch 4x scopes out there that come with reticle designed for low light use. One such scope that I can comfortably recommend is IOR 4x32 with #4 reticle: ILya
