Hello all,
I was wondering if the is such a thing. Is there a rifle scope out there that has a built in range finder in it? I was wondering because that would make it a lot easier when hunting for animals. That way you wouldnt have to switch it up between the two. Have a nice day. |

Maybe that's what Leupolds big news is. They're making a scope with a built in rangefinder. Plus it has a computer chip where you can download your ballistics, then when you range your target, the computer will adjust the reticle automatically, so it's always dead center. And it smells like bacon to attract bears.

Any scope with a "plex" type reticle can be used as a "range finder". Leo Vxlll are already set up for it . Leo varmit plex and Boone and Crockett are also "range finders". as I recall the subtension is 18" between the horizontal and the widening of the post. Using a deer as an example simply bracket the animal and read the distance of the variable power ring. If you don't have a Vxlll simply set up your scope by using a known bracket at 100 yds. Laser range finders work best for setting up the range and will probably be the big news in 2006 built in the scope itself (but if you had the laser rangefinder why bother in the first place). Another method that works well with AO is obtain a known distance at and obtain a clear focus with the AO and mark it on the ring itself, Generally the yardage marks are not accurate as they are set for someone with 20/20 vision. However as the distance gets longer the marking become closer and less usefull. 3rd generation Springfield 4.5x14 have a range finding grid in the vision field as well as various IOR's and nightforces. Most of the "toys" built into scopes nowdays assume the user has the basics of shooting down. Which is far from the reality. |
