I'm thinking about getting a ground blind this year. There are many choices but most seem cheesy and/or too costly. Two "newer" ones I've seen are Barronett and Kill Zone. The Kill Zone ones are cheaper. Any ideas, advice, etc would be welcomed. Thanks all.

I've had the AmeriStep "Outhouse" for six years... haven't taken it out of the woods since I got it, haven't used it but a couple of times, but I stopped in on it a couple times last year and it was still just fine... Wasps had built a few nests ( I HATE wasps, but that's another story.. ever had a wasp fly up your nose while hunting??). The Killzone is one I've considered getting, and may. I also have one of those that is built onto a "lounge chair". I carry it with me a lot, walk through the woods, find a likely spot, set it up and wait for the unsuspecting Bambi creatures to wander by.
I like them pretty well... Edited by Kickboxer - August/13/2010 at 14:54 |

I have the same one as KB. I only used it once because blind sitting in my area doesn't suit me well. It was comfy during a snow storm. I could open the window wide like the pic below. Or, I could use the smaller shooting window.
That being said, these modern tent style blinds are really nice. |

I've hunted from ground blinds a few times, but I feel being elevated, even if its just 8-10 feet provides me with a more desirable view point.

I love ground blind hunting. Set up in some thick brush in a field, or on a firing lane where there are no mature trees. Killed many a deer this way. The thing I look for is that there is plenty of room, and a good design for ventilation, and view. I use a portable aluminum table and a bipod when I'm in mine. Great for the longer shots that can be had if you set up in the right place. My blind is 6 1/2 feet squared, and I can use my reclining folder. Hard to beat comfort. I have hunted from a few not so large blinds, and they are a drag for extended time in the field. Make sure the blind will accomodate a comfortable chair, and table. You will spend more time in it this way, and time in it is what yields better success. Get a good blind, even if it means more money spent.

The Double Bull blinds are the best choice the side supports presses outward on the sides. What kills you in a ground blind is the wind moving it around. Get a good wind and with most of them they will scare the hell out of the deer when the sides move. Look at the way the side walls are supported before you buy one. I bought a different model at C a few years back and have used it a number of times some with success depending on placement and the best choice is between evergreens or round bales. Better to spend more and have a blind that doesnt scare away game. The current one Primos Double Bull Dark horse is a hundred off at C

Also if it is something that doesnt have to be light weight and easily moved you can make a blind out of plywood and staple camo material over it or paint it. Down side is it isnt as portable but the up side is it doesnt blow around.

my old man is a pack rat and gets old pallets and plywood coverboard from shipments from work. so we have a half doz box stands made from 2x6s and plywood and some rolled asphalt roofing. have under 50 bucks into them. a little camo paint and burlap for the windows and a few lawn chairs do the trick. a 4x6 foot box is roomy enough for 2. and vey waterproof. 2 can carry it but we use a 4x4 traqiler behind the atv to move them around.
