First off,WELCOME to OT!
Your in GOOD company. ALOT of .300 magnum fans here.
A 3-9 is a good all around choice and with a budget of $400 I'd HIGHLY recommend this:

Alot of great choices in this price & power range. I personally like the the 4200, conquest and vx3, but there are many other great options.

ive got a 4200 on my .300wby right now, the zeiss is a touch better optically. vortex viper is a nice scope too. the only issue i have with the 4200 is the lack of eye relief, but i had that 4200 on my .375H&H before the wby and it never smacked me.

Maybe consider this 3.5-10x50 Vortex Viper that's on clearance for $240. You get a $399 scope for $240 and can put the extra $160 towards rings and a couple boxes of 300 wby ammo.

Flip a coin:
or I will say I have the Conquest on my Browning .270 & I just bought (yesterday) the Vortex Viper, except i got the 4-12x40 as I wanted a tad more magnification. Either one is a great choice. ---Bboy623

LOL this funny, I just bought Conquest through reading posts on various boards, including many folks suggestions here for my Win70 300wby, my teenage sons, one has a Walmart 4-12 Bushnell on his MarkV & the other has a Bushnell Banner 6-24 mildot on his MarkV.
Those newer banners puke in extreme cold, one blast after sitting all day at 15 degrees something inside shifts can't see anything (Bushnell warranted 2) the older boy has that plastic packed Walmart 4-12 Spotsman Bushnell that takes a whooping & holds up well LOL 3 seasons so far
Now to get it mounted.
Happy Hunting
EDIT: Had to post a pic of the younger son, I was with him when he took this buck at 240yds from the open field

Great post MadMax and thanks for the pic!
Regarding scope choice, I think the 50mm might get the chin too high up off the stock on a magnum. |
