Chris,

I've narrowed my choices down to either the Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5x10x50 or Nikon Monarch 3.5x10x50. Both would be a good choice in my opinion with the Nikon edging out the Bushnell by being 3 ozs. lighter.  Is there any optical difference between the two scopes?

Flip a coin.  Both are good scopes and I think they both get the same level of glass from Light Optical Works in Japan (I will have to double check that).  At any rate, when comparing the Elite and Monarch levels, you are talking very comparable products.

Jeff,

The Elite is a quad power scope meaning it goes 4x its original power giving you a broader power range.  The Elite also has the proprietary rainguard coatings that repel water and fog.  There are minute optical difference between the two, the Nikon has better eye relief and a wider field of view.  Clarity and low light performance are pretty close with my eyes seeing the Elite 4200 as being brighter and clearer.  I would save the 70 bucks and go with the Elite.

Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x50....$369.95

Nikon Monarch 3.5-10x50.....$439.95

Hey Jeff,

I think that Chris and ranburr would back me up on this one so I will go out on a limb and state the following. It is generally accepted that the maximum that the human pupil can dialate to is 7mm. As we get into our 40's, it drops to around 5mm. What  am referring to is the exit pupil max. of the two scopes you are looking to purchase. Chris already knowns that I would go with the Elite 4200, but what I was wondering was why you felt the need to go with the 50mm objective on both choices. In other words if you went with a 40mm objective that would still give you 5mm exit pupil at 8x and save you weight and having to use high or extra high scope ring mounts. Exit pupil is arrived at by dividing the objective size by the power setting ( 40mm divided by 8 = 5mm of exit pupil). You might be better served by the Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 with the FireFly reticle. Well thats my 2 cents worth! The FireFly reticle has two BIG low light advantages. It glows in the dark and is heavier that the standard duplex reticles which in my opinion will serve you better for low light shooting conditions.
