Hi everybody.
I am going Hunting with my buddy from Idaho in Oct. To avoid all the hazzle with the airlines - authoreties etc. i decidet to let my gear stay at home and buy a new rifle and scope in the US. I bought a Tikka T3 30-06 and now i need suggestions to a decent scope for max 500$. You have a much bigger selection of scopes over there, we can only get a fraction of it over here, a lot of what you have we can only dream of. Over here i use a Mark 3 M1 Leupold 4,5 - 14 - 50 and i am very happy with it. I am aware that i can`t get anything like that for the amount i want to spend , but i am looking for a good scope WITH the turrets so i can click it up and down as much as i like. Someone told me that in the US you can buy some of the Leupold V3s with tactical turret. Does anybody know anything about this?? Thanks Claus Eriksen |

Perhaps a Sightron SII Big Sky 3-12 X 42 with A.O. and target knobs. It's listed at $560.00 but there is a $75.00 mail in rebate. Check it out.

Thank you for the reply`s
SVT : I checked out the Conquests. I can`t find any 3-9s with target knobs . The closest i get is a 4,5-14x44 for around 900-950 $ whitch a bit to much. bugsNbows : I haven`t heard about sightron before. They looks nice and their prices looks good to me. I will try to find a dealer here in DK. who have them in store. ( It all looks nice on the computer right) :-) Cyborg: Thank for the welcome. The leupold you suggest are great. But i will try to keep it at max 500$. Do you know if i can buy some of the Leupold V3s with tactical turret, turrets after mounted in the gunstore or does it have to be ordered from the factory? Regards Claus

I doubt you will really need target knobs on the Conquest, but you can get them from Zeiss I believe for about an extra $50 or so.
One option is a 3-9x40 Conquest with a Z600 or Z800 reticle - very effective and no need to dial the knobs - a very good bullet drop reticle.
I took a Tikka .30-06 and Conquest 3-9x40 with #4 German reticle with me to Namibia 2 years ago and had amazing success with this combination:
Honestly, you can't go wrong with the Conquest, though the Super Sniper is also a good consideration as well.

Claus... If truly tactical turrets is what you are after in the VXIII line, it will be a custom shop job from Leupold. Unfortunately it will also be well above your stated 500.00 budget.
Here's a possible suggestion (I have read they are not bad for the money)

Greywolf: I have never tried the z 6-800. Maybe a stupid question but do you have to order the scope for the particular caliber you shoot with like a BDC or does it work no matter what you are shooting with? Are the reticles as precise as the turrets?
Looks like a GREAT trip to Africa. :-)) I will have to read it more closely. Cyborg: Hmm. i had hoped you had told me they could put on the turrets in the gun shop. :-( I see what you mean about the price then. I will make a little drilling about the Hawke scopes. The prices looks fantastic, i will try to found out more about the quality.

If I recall correctly Ilya did a review, and since the glass upgrade was accomplished he said a few nice things about them. Here's a review from him.

Claus,
I have found the z600 reticle to be incredibly precise. You just put your load data into Zeiss' website calculator and they tell you what magnification to set the scope to in order to match the reticle subtensions to your loads trajectory. You will need to verify in the field, but I found it pretty easy to set up, and extremely handy during the hunt. |

The Rapid-Z reticles are not specific to a caliber or bullet. You go to Zeiss' website and there is a calculator there. You enter the date for your rifle, caliber, bullet weight, velocity, etc. and it will give you a particular magnification (say 8x on a 3-9x scope) that, when you set you Zeiss to that magnification, then all of the subtensions on the reticle are accurate for the bullet drop. It is actually a pretty amazing little thing - go ahead and Google "rapid-z reticle" and you will get a lot of information, reviews, etc.
I wish I had one with me in Namibia for the baboons - they never let us get closer than 400 yards and I got very lucky on a 550 yard shot, but would have felt better with a Rapid-Z reticle.

Cyborg: I read the Ilya review. It seems like it is good for the money, but i am not sure that i, in the long run, would be happy with a scope from China.
Bitterroot - Greywolf: I checked out the Zeiss webside and must admit and must admit it looks exiting with those reticles. ,but i guess it is something you have to play a bit with in the field to make sure it is working as planned or no? When i get to Idaho i will not have a whole lot of time before the season opens. |

Of course, you could also try and stalk and get closer. I didn't have that option when hunting baboon, though - those damn critters are just too smart and wiley.

Claus.. Welcome to the OT. Let me throw out another suggestion for you. http://swfa.com:80/Vortex-4-12x40-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P10820.aspx
While this scope doesn't have the high target turrets it still has finger adjustable turrets that should work well for dialing in elevation. They are also re-settable without the use of any tools. Vortex is well known on this site for the quality of thier optics vs. the price and right now the sale price on this scope can't be beat. Vortex is apparently going to makeover this line so the older models are priced to move. I just ordered one of these the other day and I see now the price has dropped another $50.00. Oh well... The only complaint I have ever heard of the 4-12 model is a slight bit of a tunneling effect but nothing so severe as to be an impediment. Maybe Illya will chime in here as he has reviewed this scope. Mine is due to arrive on TUE. so I will se how it compares to other scopes I have.

Over here i am using reloaders but i won`t bother to bring them over because of hazzle in the airports etc.
I am planing to buy some Remington A frame safari 180 grain, i heard they should go well with the T 3. Well, i don`t mind long shots as long as i know how my gear works, i also rather take long secure shots, where you can rest and shoot from a good possition, than stalk and stalk and end up with a lousy possition or a branch that breaks etc. etc. |

Hi big green.
Thank`s for the welcome. I just made a short peep on the Vortex. They are not being sold here in DK. I`ll have to read more about them tomorrow as i am about to leave the computer for today. |

Claus... Vortex is a damned good scope line. You will like them. One thing to bear in mind. You will be hard pressed to find a scope that isn't from China until you start getting up a bit more in price. Nikons are Phillipines or Japan depending on model. The biggest thing about scopes from China are the QC issues. Some companies put alot of effort into QC. Vortex is one of them. Hawke seems to be another one. Both are also interested in owner feedback.
Just something to think about. Also, Hawke being a British company may make getting any warranty issues easier should that arise, since you are in Europe.
