Can anyone give me any information on meopta scopes? I have been told that meopta is a europian company that actually makes the glass that goes in zeiss and swarvoski scopes and that they (meopta) are trying to get started in the u.s. any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Meopta is not connected to Swarovski or Zeiss but Meopta does make a very
nice scope. They are made in Czechoslovakia. Wish I could tell you more but I
don't have enough experience with them.

I saw that Chris's comments (link in Stephanie's reply) about the Meopta were from 2003. Have you guys seen any improvement in customer service or quality?

Hey all, I have a 3x12-44 meostar w/30mm tube on a 308. I have hunted with it for 2 years now and it has endured a lot of weather. My wife droped it from a 12 foot tripod, no harm was done either internal or external. I hunt with a pair of 10x42 Kahles binos and the Meopta is always brighter than the binos. It has been a good product for the $$.

3 or 4 years ago I considered buying a meopta scope because they were 2 times cheaper than the big three, and I asked many gunsmiths that mounted and sighted them, and they all said that they had problems with some of them holding zero, so of course I stayed away from them. After that Meopta released a new model and they are not so cheap any more - maybe they are better quality now but if I'm going to spend 1000$ on the scope, I'll spend additional 100$ and get Swaro,Zeiss, Kahles...-not Meopta. If I want something cheaper I'll go with cheaper Leupolds-it may not be the same optic quality but it will hold zero- and that is what is important to me. Just my 0,02$ |

Meopta scopes are junk and their customer service is terrible. STAY AWAY!!! I recently bought a meopta meostar 3-10x50. When I recieved it I noticed there were black spots visible when looked thru (not to mention big ugly flat head screws). I looked in the eye piece with the aid of a small fashlight and noticed what looked to be an oily smudge on the interior glass. I called meopta and was told to send the scope back. I asked if the scope would be repaired or just replaced-I was assured it would be replaced and sent out ASAP. I sent it off. Now a week later I call meopta to see whats happening with my replacement. I am told that it would be at least 2 week before it would be looked at to see if it could be fixed. FIXED??? 2 WEEKS? I told "mike" this was total B.S. and that I was told a replacement would be shipped as soon as meopta recieved my scope back.....mike told me I was "missinformed" then hung up on me after I asked more questions. I called the secretary back and chewed her butt until she put super nerd "mike" back on the phone. I told him leupold. burris, or even tasco would immediatly send a replacement scope and yet meopta wants to REPAIR this defective POS AFTER 2 WEEKS. He told me "in a perfect world" they would just replace it that but not with meopta. I now have talk to Richard Gilligan if he desides to come to work (he is there about 1 day a week from what I have been from mike) and see what he has to say.
Bottom line is meopta scope are heavy and look good but are junk and the warranty sucks-if there even is a warranty....I asked about the warranty and got silence from good ol mike. I have heard now after my problems that meopta scopes can not take repeated recoil from anything larger than a .223 and I believe it. Buy a leupold-bushnell 4200-burris-zeiss or any other scope before you buy this junk from the Czech Republic......what do czechs know about rifle scope anyways-there american importer in new york is just plain lowsy. P.S. While I had this scope I compared it to my Sightrom 3.5-10x44 and my leupold vari xIII and it simply did not stack up to either. The extra money for a meopta is a scam. |

I am sorry you had bad luck with your Meopta, localyoke, but I think your experience is not the norm.
I have played with quite a few Meopta scopes and they were quite good. As for the customer service, this is, quite literally, the first time I hear something about their customer service. I am not doubting your words, but it certainly does not sound like Meopta's norm. ILya |

I have to disagree, I've had a 4-12x40 r1 mounted on a 300wby for about a year now, without a problem. I am currently finishing a personal test of the current scopes I own and while the meopta does not have the resolution as my Swaro Av or Kahles Cl, I can tell you that it eats the Vx III lunch as far as resolution is concerned. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge leupold fan, I own more Leupold scopes than any other manufacturer. Maybe you got a bad scope, it does happen.

There is an awful lot of BS about who makes what going around anymore--and a lot of it has always been shoveled by "representatives" at various trade shows.
Meopta does make SOME Zeiss glass. In fact they make not just most of the lenses but the larger parts for the Zeiss Conquest riflescopes. The only part of the Conquests that's made in Germany is the erector system. The rest is made by Meopta, and then the parts are shipped to the U.S. and assembled here.
Some Kahles glass is made in Japan, so if it is all made by Swarovski then all Swarovski glass is made in Japan--which is extremely doubtful.
There is also the problem of what "making glass" means. There is first the glass itself, which is normally made in plants dedicated to making big chunks of glass. Then this glass is cut and ground into lenses. The optics company may or may not do this themselves; in fact a lot of companies order lenses made to their specifications from various factories. Then the coatings are applied, which may be done by the same company that grinds the lenses--and may not.
So to say this and that comes from X is a little simplistic. It is even more simplistic to say that any optics company makes their own stuff totally in one factory. That is just not the way manufacturing works most of the time these days.

I finnaly got to speak with Richard Gilligan today about my scope problems. Richard actually was pretty decent about the situation and has agreed to send me a new REPLACEMENT scope right away and assured me they were a great scope. This is what a buyer is to expect from a quality scope manufacturer-not some slow motion B.S. run around. I will post when I receive the scope and report how every thing turns out.

I would have to put it in the same league as my Zeiss Conquest line and maybe close to the Kahles Helia L that I have.
