I am about to build a new bench queen, which will be a Savage action(single shot) with a 30" barrel chambered for 308win 1:12 twist, mounted in a factory laminate stock, that I may modify a little. This is specificly for 100-300yards target shooting.
So here is my question is a Mueller 8-32 or similar scope decent enough for this project? The budget won't allow for much more than $400 for an optic once all the other parts are bought. Is there something else I should look at in this range, someday I would like to move up to a night force or better but that is a long way off.
 What are your thoughts?

It has always seemed that all the manufactures tend to charge more for magnification than better glass. More magnification magnifies the defects of the glass more than the target. You should find that a 20X scope may let you see the target better than a scope of higher power. With the step down in power you can take 2 steps up in glass quality, more or less.

The vortex viper 6-20 with the target dot would be a good choice

Fine cross hairs are good. 32 power is to me a waste unless you move up to true premium grade of a scope. Even with my 6.5-20 Zeiss, at 20 x I notice a substantial drop in the contrast and perceived clarity. It is not uncommon to drop down to 12X-14X to be able to remove the haze and heat mirage when shooting 200 yds or more. $400 will not get Premium, but don't waste what you do get on what well may be unusable magnification.
