Ok guys, I've got $1300 budgeted for my nephew's graduation. I want to make sure he doesn't need to buy another bino for a long while. We hunt open country, so we've always used 10x42's and we'll stick with that. I've got it narrowed down to these:
1. Swaro SLC neu demo-$1200 2. Nikon EDG demo-$1300 3. Kowa Genesis-$850 3. Any other suggestions??? Not considering a Vortex Razor,Zen Ray ED2, Meopta, Leupy GR Hd (I use one and it's awesome), or Bushnell Elite, or a Meopta (hate the thin eyecups), or any Minox (narrow FOV). What do you pick and why? |

From what I gather, you really can't go wrong with any of them. I had a set of meopta 10x42 and got rid of them with my sight set on a pair of kowas

If I could get the kowas for $850.00 I'd jump on that.

Here's a good deal on that Minox:
spend the extra on a tripod adapter and harness.

That's one lucky nephew!
I'd definitely get the Kowa, if you can get it for that price. |

Even with a $1300 limit, you might be able to shop around and find a pair of Zeiss Victory T* FL if you're stuck on the 10x42 size. And I wouldn't pass up a bargain in the 7x or 8x (I have the 8x42), or even the 8x32 which gets a top rating on the birding forums.
I've had (3) Swarovski's and a Leica and my Victorys are the best yet. Edited by tpcollins - July/13/2010 at 07:25 |

My comments are very limited by experience. A friend of mine bought some EDGs a couple years ago and the right eye diopter would not stay locked. So he sent them back and got some Swaros instead. He brought those over once and, man, you could look through them all day! I was pleased that the glass in my Swaro RF was almost as good.
