so im seriously considering an ar build for this coming winter. my issue is that i need parts to build it obviously, but my question is this, i see some places sell lowers that they say are armalite compatible, then others say they sell lowers that are dpms compatible, whats the difference and which is better??

also if anybody knows of decent places to order lowers and uppers that would help me out too. i need a stripper ar-10 upper and either a complete lower or a stripped lower.

im looking to build a .338fed ar-10Cool

There are a few versions of 30-cal receivers, DPMS, Armalite, and Rock River - and maybe a few others.  None are compatible with others.

As to which is better, there is no hard metric to define the term "better."  I like Armalites, I have had great success with Armalites over the years, I bought an Armalite.  I know guys with DPMS and they like them.  I hear good things about the Rock Rivers (though there seem to be far fewer of those - newer - and only Rock River makes parts for them.)

My experience is that Armalites cost a little more, whether you get anything for that is debatable.  I like Armalite, I trust Armalite, I bought Armalite.

I was looking into a 308 at one time Called DPMS he mentioned something about if i had dpms upper i could only use it on a dpms lower reciever. dont quote me on this but I think he said they can use the FAL 308 mags. but good luck Thunbs Up

Check out Fulton Armory, they have everything you would need to complete a 308.  Their uppers and lowers are DPMS compatable (pretty sure).  Either way, Armalite or DPMS, you will be good.

Unlike the AR15 platform, which has established mil specs so that most anyone's upper will work with anyone's lower, and you can pretty much mix parts, the AR10 platform never was truly standardized.  Armalite started the AR10 platform, so they are considered the "standard."  Many parts like trigger groups, buffer parts, bolt heads, etc. are interchangeable, but not all AR10 lowers and uppers are compatible.  DPMS has a slightly different mating contour between upper and lower than Armalite.  However, if you have a particular lower already, just let whomever you plan to buy the upper from know what you have and they should be able to tell you whether their upper is compatible.

My lower came from them (Armalite-compatible.)  Upper came from Armalite.

I hear the DPMS are as accurate as you care to make them.  Both Armalite and DPMS have MANY options.  I chose to build mine myself because it was (maybe still is) less expensive than buying something "close" and swapping parts to get to what you want.

Rancid-- looks like JonA got his one piece scope mount going. Nice solid unit, priced right, streamlined, few questions however-- Whats the spacing distance between the rings?  Is the clamping plate made of Al or steel?

Hi Dale, the spacing between rings is 2.54".  The 34mm model was kept short specifically to fit S&B 3-12 and 4-16 PMII scopes which have short ring spacing due to their illumination control taking up some of the space on the tube.   However the spacing is wide enough it should fit any 34mm scope out there I know of except for USO T-Pals.  The 30 and 35mm mounts will have a larger spacing (2.9") so they should fit T-Pals (and obviously fitting S&B isn't a concern in those sizes).

It's all aluminum, including the clamp.  Great care was taken to correctly size the parts for the given material allowables.  The Grade 8 screws, the clamp and the threads in the body will all fail at roughly the same load--which is so high both the rifle and scope would likely be destroyed in the process.

First scope mount for an AR-type rifle I've ever seen that I liked.  I had chosen the FNH FNAR, but now the AR-10 is back on the "list".
Very nice, Jon.  Good looking and functional looking.

Jon's mount functions very well, solid, lots of lockup area.  I like it.

Be advised, it ain't for the 6.5-pound carbine crowd, it is rather large and bulky, but no worries the scope will move under impact.

I haven't removed and remounted (to check for POI shifts) yet, but so long as it goes back in the same slots, it looks like POI shift should be minimal.

And the screws are the larger tip, not those tiny ones that strip out so easily.  That is a huge plus!
