All right, like any self-respecting couch warrior I can't just sit
still and always I want to try something different (a trait shared by
many and the one that probably keeps a lot of retailers in business).
I have a Savage 12FV in 22-250 (choate varmint stock). I currently have a Burris Fullfield II 6.5-20x50 with thin plex on it. I am going to seel that scope and get something else instead. This rifle is used for target shooting and for varminting from the bench. It is not going to be carried around a whole lot. I am trying to decide between magnification ranges. I do not think I have used any magnification beyond 15x or so with any regularity, so I am not sure I need it. Hence I am trying to decide if I want something in 4-16x range or in a 6-24x range. Since the gun is not going to be carried a whole lot a larger objective lense is probably a good thing, but is not a must since the kind of shooting I do with this rifle is mostly done in fairly decent light. I like to tinker with various range-estimating holdover reticles, so something along the lines of a Mil-Dot or a BallisticPlex would be nice. Optically, I am primarily concerned with good resolution. I am looking to spend somewhere between $400 and $600 on this scope. I already have a few Sightrons so I am looking to play with something different. I've been considering Elite 4200 6-24x40 with MilDot, Burris Black Diamond 4-16x50 and Signature Select 4-16x44 or 6-24x44 with BalMD. Nikon Monarch does not seem to offer any holdover reticles. Leupold makes some nice scopes in the VX-3 line, but they are out of my price range. IORs are too expensive for me also. Any opinions? Anything I am missing? Another option is a Browning 8-24x40 with MilDot. I was under an impression that Brownings have Elite 4200 lenses. If that is the case then it is a very good deal. Thanks. Ilya |

Wanting a holdover reticle such as a mil-dot limits the choices. An IOR
4-14x50 was on the sample list a few days back for $649.95 and that is
a great scope and just a little over your range, to bad it has already
sold. Look at the samplelist, there are a few scopes on it right now
that might interest you, such as a Burris Black Diamond in 6-24x50 with
a Mil-Dot at $649.95 and some others. You could wait on the varialbe
super snipers that should be out soon.

I've thought of a super sniper, but I'd like a variable scope. As
for the variable Super Snipers, that could be an interesting
opotion. Are their reticles going to in the First Focal plane, or
second?

I am still trying to make up my mind, to be honest.
The front runnerrs are Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 wi/MilDot and Burris SIgnature Select 4-16x44 with Ballistic MilDot. I am leaning toward the Elite 4200 for the time being (primarily because I have a lot more experience with Burris scopes than with Elite 4200). I might however, wait for the variable Super Sniper to appear. If the reticle is not too big at higher magnification, it should work well on a varminter. Ilya |

We have a Burris 6-24x44 Signature ballistic mil dot on eBay right now at no reserve. It says 6-24x50 but it's a 6-24x44. I didn't have my coffee that morning.

Yeah, it's been on my watch list for a couple of days. We'll see
what the final price will be. Also, the auction ends pretty early
on Monday morning (I am on the left coast) and I might be stuck in a
meeting at that time.
Brady, if you had to pick between Signature Select 6-24x44 and Elite 4200 6-24x40, what would you go with? Thanks. Ilya |

Thats a hard comparison. Each has something to offer over the other. For what you plan on doing the ballistic mil dot retcile may be the reason to choose the Burris over the Bushnell. I'd probably go Burris.
