Im buying an M1a with an ebr stock and am wondering what type of optic I should get to match the rifle?  I want a scope that has bullet drop compensation for far shots.  I plan on using this rifle for hunting and target purposes.

You are headed the right direction if you are using a Sage ebr stock the standard stocks dont allow good cheekweld and require a cheekpiece.  Mounting an optic can be a challenge I use a mount made by Smith Enterprises who makes the Smith Vortex which I really like for a flash suppressor for the M1a.  As for the optic I would  consider several depending on your tollerance for price.   First choice would be a Nightforce or U.S. Optics as the rifle will never be accurate enough to merit a  Heinsoldt and its a streatch to think you would get your money worth out of much past a Leupold Mk 4.  Of the Leupold Mark 4 series I would consider the 4.5-14 and the 6.5-20 and would select based on if you think most of your shooting will be closer or farther.  I would not go higher in power than 6.5 for the low end.  I would also consider the Trijicon 5-20x50 illuminated mil dot keeping in mind that it only has 50 moa of internal adjustment which is a lot less than the other scopes mentioned above.  Still the Trijicon is a very nice scope and quite capable of 600 yds but not enough adjustment to be a thousand yard scope but then the rifle probably wont be capable much past 600 anyway so its a good match and the price is quite reasonable for what you are getting.

Suggest you stay away from true bullet drop compensation like the M3 series knobs on Leupold Mk 4  10x
http://www.kentonindustries.com/pics/picbytype/  Kenton Ind knobs can be had for many scopes and you will want either 1/10 mil clicks or 1/4 moa clicks to more precisely adjust.
The 1 moa clicks of an M3 knob is too rough an adjustment for most people because 1 click at 600 yds moves the scope 6 inches where a 1/4 moa would move it 1.5 inches

Thanks for the info.  Its the loaded version of the m1a.  At one point I was looking at the Springfield scopes and I like the fact that the scopes are meant for a .308 what kind of other good scopes are meant just for the .308?  Or should I even focus if the scope is calibrated for the rifle?
