Ok guys,.....I'm made my decision. I want a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 scope for my 30-06. $419 here on SWFA. How does it compare to the Team Primos 3-9x40 and half the price?? I kinda want something a little more than a 3-9; thus my decision on the 3-12. I have the tad bit extra....but at a big price difference. Would I notice anything different between the two at low light settings? It will be for deer hunting with max shots 350-400; but probably all would be 200 yards or less. I am in a money crunch and am trying to make the best decision.
Wait and get the 3-12 Monarch, or get the Primos now??? I kinda like the idea of teh side focus on the monach...but its not a deal breaker. Help me out guys----Bboy623

For what you're looking to do, that Primos is a great scope. You get a free jacket and have a bit of jingle left for gas money. I've never had much luck trying to focus long range with a lot of magnification in a hunting situation. For bench shooting the extra magnification is great. Paper isn't going to move and your stress level and adrenalin will be less. Shooting out of a stand at an animal that might move at any time, the extra field of vision from a lower magnification is good, and you will still be able to focus on your target. Just my .02 |

At 400 yards the extra magnification can be nice but is not necessary. The side focus can be nice if you have time to use it. Just another thing to mess with. I have it on a couple of my scopes and like it but I really do enjoy the simplicity of a 3-9 without it. My favorite scope is my SS Variable 3-9. I have thought about getting one to swap out with the 4-16 on my 300 Win Mag. Anyway that is another story. The 3-9 are great scopes and for your use would be a great setup.

ok guys, I'm still debating the 3-9 or 3-12 issue and am taking in you guys advice.
My NEXT problem is if I do decide to get a 3-9...do I get the Primos and save some $$$ or get probably the best value in scopes and get a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X40. I just bought one back at Christmas and mounted it in my Browning BAR Safari II. I got it sighted in a couple weeks ago. Very nice scope!!!!!
I don't want to spend more than I have to, but at the same time I don't want to buy something and wish I had gotten something a little better or had a tad extra magnification. This is my delimma.
About the price of the Monarch 3-12 is my limit, as this again is going on my 30-06..but I'll probably use my Browning .270 (Pyros favorite caliber..hehe) more.
Ahhhhhh--Decisions decisions.---Bboy623

The Conquest does appear optically 'better' to my old eyes, followed by the 4200 and then the Monarch... most differences between these scopes are merely incremental; they're all fine machines.
The Conquest is also known to have excellent low- light characteristics, while the 4200 has Rainguard. The 4200's shorter eye relief shouldn't be an issue with a .30-06 if you aren't a stock crawler. edit- re: prices The 3-9 Team Primos, 4200 and Conquest are all screaming bargains at their current price points! Even the fixed 10x Super Sniper or 6x model that will come out this summer would be good hunting choices if you dial in correction to compensate for trajectory. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - April/11/2010 at 12:02 |
