Just an additional note regarding the P-51 "Worry Bird". As part of Col. Robert Frisch's 80th birthday celebration, the owner of the restored copy of Worry Bird (modified for a second seat) took the old veteran up for what was likely Frisch's last flight aboard the P-51, and for real stick time.  It was a heart-warming event for all involved, and the Colonel reverted to his Lieutenant form from 60 years previous, piloting that Mustang with gusto and never-forgotten finesse.

Colonel Frisch divides his residence between Spokane Washington and Sarasota Florida.

The P38 Lightning. As much as I loved the Mustang, and Corsair, for some reason the Lightning is my favorite.

Bricat posted my favorite, the P-47. it's the fighter that the U.S. AirForce needed in Korea, as it was a much better ground attack fighter than the P-51. With it's 8 .50 cal. MGs and radial  engine it was harder to shoot down with ground fire, and carried more ordinance than the P-51. The radiator of the P-51 was it's week point, as one round in the cooling system would soon bring it down.
No argument from me about the P-51, it is the greatest fighter ever. While there were faster, more maneuverable, and faster climbing or diving fighters, they didn't have the Mustang's range, and they didn't have the balance in performance that the Mustang had.
The FW 190-D (Long Nose Dora) was my favorite Axis fighter, with the FW 190-A being a close second.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
