Question is: Is it worth buying the Bushnell 6500 2.5x16 over the fixed SS10x42? Is the glass better on the bushnell? Is the 10x enough? I plan on shooting out to 900 yards if my skills will allow. I would appreciate some input.

Well, It all depends on what all your doing with the rifle? 10X is plenty for 900 yards. I have the 6500 and have a 10XHD test scope that I want to get out and do some shooting with if I can get away to the range. Work has been WORK lately. what all do you intend for this rifle?

The 6500 will have marginally better glass than the 10XSS, unless you are talking about the 10XHD, that has better glass than the 6500.
A 10X will get you to 900 yards, but I want a little more magnifcation than 10X out past about 500. On what rifle is it going? What is your experience level with shooting. Do you actually have a place to shoot 900 yards in your area? |

I asked the same question and for what it's worth. I am very happy with the SS 16x42. Have only got to shoot it three times and was able to see clearly out to 800-900 meters with no problem. Targets where milk jugs and steel silhouette targets.

If you plan on ever using the gun for hunting or distances closer in than around 100yds, I would go variable and even look at the SS variable....If it will be a range king and mainly see target work way out there, then I would go with the SS10xHD or SS 3-9. If you want to keep the budget down the regular 10X or 16X would be great as well.

That's why I asked the question about what all he's going to do with it. Range queen rifle I would recommend the 10X with no hesitation. I shot a 10X42M for years an rang gongs to 1k with it. At 1K it's more a function of wind doping for your pills of choice. But, if this is a " Do All " rifle go with the variable.

what power to use at 1k is more a function of what size the target is. elk, deer, most big game 10x is good enough for most. if prairie dogs or crows are your target, i'm wanting more magnification. if it's a hunting gun, that 2-16 is about as versatile as you can get. a straight 10x is a bit much for me. with that said i went on an elk hunt this year with a straight 20x! long story.

its going on a howa 24inch heavy barrel in 308. it will just be for range shooting at steel targets. i know a place that has a 900 yard range. alot of law enforcement agencies use this range during the week but open to the public during the weekends.
