Looking for what would be the most accurate caliber of these for long range (600+ yards).

308. nothing more to it. Higher BC and Wind will not affect it as much and still supersonic. I don't know much about the 22-250 but the 223 is not quite enough IMO for effectiveness at that range.

600+ Yards is a long way to push a light 22 cal. pill. I'd opt for the .308, and a heavier high b.c. bullet, but that's just how I roll.

What about if 243 Winchester, 204 Ruger, and 17 Remington Fireball where also thrown into the mix.
Would the .308 still be the champ? |

Nice. The reason I bring all this up was because I am trying to decide which caliber to get and I want one based upon accuracy at longer distances, and these are all the options that the rifle I want to get comes in.
I was leaning towards a .308 anyways. Edited by CALL911 - March/28/2010 at 18:59 |

Your comparing apples and oranges. I've seen .223's shoot quite well at 600 yards. Now throw in gusting wind, and that little bullet is going all over the place. If you really want to mix it up go with a 7mm aut 8 with 162 gr Amaxs. But, you'll get more life out of the .308.

I am a proud owner of a .300 WSM. But if I had it to all over again, I would probably would have gone with a .308 win. because of ammo availability. If I ever get to where I have enough money to build a custom rifle though, I will probably chamber it in .260 Remington.

Obviously, you have better luck with .308 ammo there than here. I can buy all the .300 wsm ammo I want, but if I want .308. 30-06, 9mm, or .45ACP, I have to be at the store when it comes off the truck.

Not only is the ammo for .308 more plentiful, it is about half the price! At least here.

a custom fast twist barrel on a 22-250 with heavy bullets would be hard for a 308 to beat at 600 yds. i have shot a douglas barreled 22-250 at one hundred yds 5 shots 1 hole.but barrel life would be short. if i were going to hunt deer also i would get the 308. but for me the only choice would be the 223.

If you really want a sweet one for 600 yards look at the .260 rem. It has near identical drop and windage adjustments of a 190 grain .300 WM out to 1000 yards with the 140 grain 6.5 bullets. It just blows the .308 out of the water in that respect.

You might also throw 7mm-08 into the mix. Like 6.5mm, the 7mm bullets have higher BC than .30 yet with a little better bullet selection than 6.5.

I wasn't looking for the ultimate accurate caliber out of everything here. Just out of the options I listed previously.
