Hi, I just got a Remington 700 ADL .270 a few days back because a good family friend of mine has offered to let me hunt on his land next deer season. My problem is I really dont know much about scopes other then what the numbers mean. When it comes to choosing the right scope for the right hunt Im lost. So, I was hoping yall could help me find a good scope for around $100-200. I can tell you Im hunting in Texas and shots will typically be taken from 100 yards give or take and its probably gonna be around 40-60 degrees (never can tell weather in Texas).Overall: Im lookin to spend $100-150, 3-9x seems to be the average but I dont know how big is to big like 3-9x40 or 3-9x32 etc, and of course I want the scope to stay on center after several shots. It seems like if you buy a cheap scope they have to be resighted sometimes(from what ive read).
Thanks

Oh, and I kinda would like the cross hairs to have the dots below it for the further distances like 200-500 yards. Im not sure if that makes it more difficult to get sighted in though or if thats calibar specific increments.

3-9 sounds like plenty of scope for what you'll be doing. Here's a couple in your price range. $100-200 They are listed in the order I'd buy if it were me. http://swfa.com/Vortex-3-9x40-Diamondback-Rifle-Scope-P11237.aspx http://swfa.com/Nikon-3-9x40-Team-Primos-Riflescope-P44156.aspx http://swfa.com/Redfield-3-9x40-Revolution-Rifle-Scope-P44469.aspx You can spend less, but you'll get what you pay for. The ones I listed are all decent, and have the features you asked about. The Bushnell Elite 3200 series has rain guard "which is a nice feature for a hunting rifle", but doesn't have any extended range dots or marks or I'd have included it. http://swfa.com/Bushnell-3-10x40-Elite-3200-Rifle-Scope-P4558.aspx Welcome to the forum. |

The Burris 300 suggested is also a good choice from what I've heard. I've never actually looked through one so I didn't suggest it.

+1 on the burris. Nice scope. You might also look at the Nikon Primos scope.

Choices are good.
There is a lot of good glass out there for 2 bills. Sure makes me wish I'd of used better decision making scoping out my rigs for the last 20 years. If you added up all the money I've wasted buying junk scopes I could have had several really decent ones. I looked through the $399 Zeiss Conquest "bought for a bit more than that by a friend " and back through my Diamondback and didn't see 2x the price worth of difference. He didn't either, but he's happy with his and I'm happy with mine. "Granted that is the BOTTOM of the Zeiss line-up and more than mid ways up on the Vortex, but still not enough difference for me on a budget to justify having 2 of 1 or 1 of the other" |

I"ve used both the FFII and the Nikon team primos on my 270 win. The Nikon looks brighter and more clear to me. I also like the eye relief of the Nikon.

You can not get much of a scope maybe not even one from China for much less $200. for a 3-9x40 (which is probably the least amount of scope that you will be happy with). The Primos or Redfield are probably your best bets.

Does having the bullet drop increments on there effect how I need to sight the scope in or anything. Like the same scope on a .30-.06, the .30-.06 is going to have more drop than a .270 at 200 yards so wouldnt that make the it a little un accurate?
also what is a good diameter number? i see 32mm, 40mm, and 50mm. All i know is the bigger that is the higher the scope will have to be, i believe.

Go to the 'Member's Tests and Reviews' section of this site. Read Ilya Koshkin's 'Inexpensive Scope Comparison.'
Pick a 3-9X40 made by Burris, Bushnell, Leupold, Nikon, Redfield, or Vortex. Sight in your 270 so it's 2 to 2.2 inches high at 100 yards. For deer, aim dead on at any distance to 250 yards. |

For what you're planning on doing, the dot is going to be close enough. You will have to play with it a little to see where your bullet hits in relation to the dot and perhaps compensate a smidge on longer shots but unless you're bench shooting for the 10 ring it's going to be plenty close for an animal bigger than a cat.
The numbers on the end, 32 40 44 etc. are a good indicator of how much light will be gathered by the glass. 40 is pretty popular for hunting as it's a good compromise between size and light transmission. It allows you to still mount the scope fairly low and have good brightness. "glass quality makes a bigger difference than size, and all of the scopes suggested have good enough glass take hunting at 40mm" Ilya and several others have a much better vocabulary on the how it works stuff. When you decide what to get, ask the guys here what rings you need. I don't have an ADL so really don't know how much bolt clearance you'll need but chances are someone will have a set up really close to what you'll be doing and can help out. |

Totally overlooked the Bushnell Trophy. I have one and like it. Good Call Frnd
The 4200 on sale is a STEAL at $255 and you'd likely never feel like you could have done better. |

The Nikon Monarch/Team Primos deal thru SWFA is hands down the best scope you're gonna find for 200 bills. No contest.
