What would be a good scope for a Remington 597 (.22 LR).

Mostly target shooting at 100 yards or less.

Looking for something a bit on the lower side of the price range.

What about a Bushnell 3-9X32? It's only $45 which had me concerned.

Lots of good glass out there under $300

Pick of the litter I.M.O.

http://swfa.com/Vortex-2-7x32-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P11226.aspx

If you'd of said $200

http://swfa.com/Nikon-3-9x40-Team-Primos-Riflescope-P44156.aspx

If you'd of said $100

http://swfa.com/Vortex-6-24x50-Crossfire-Rifle-Scope-P43585.aspx

It's back ordered for a couple of months, but will be worth the wait.

Only problem with this is you will loose any short range target acquisition.

Short range target acquisition depends on what your doing with the 6-24 Crossfire. I have mine on an air rifle and haven't had any problems taking seven yard shots at pests. If something was on the move it might be a problem.
It is a great scope for the money but would be a bit overwhelming on a 597, it's huge. I would look at the Weaver, Vortex and Leupolds that were mentioned.

I haven't used the Bushnell 3-9x32. I have looked through them on a few different guns. When I look at scopes that cost less I also want less, regarding features. I would not spend $45 dollars on a variable in most cases. The other Vortex mentioned and their fixed 4x rim fire I would consider first.
The Vortex for a $100 is something else, though. It is simply a steal.

Agreed on short range target stuff, but with the right rings you can iron sight short range stuff.

Dunno if my favorite see-thru rings are gunna provide the clearance needed for iron sights with a 50mm bell, but it would look cool. Head Bang

597's are pretty accurate off the shelf for autoloaders.

With Bushnell, if it says Elite... It's Japanese glass. If it doesn't it's Chinese. The Trophy series is not bad for Chinese actually. "got one on my kids .223 single shot"

Am I guessing correctly that the standard holds true of Japanese glass is better than Chinese?

In my opinion, yes it does.

The Chinese are capable of making good glass, but are more focused on production numbers than they are on quality control.

That checks with everything I have experienced in general that is made in China.

It's hard sometimes even finding items anymore that aren't made in China.

Back to the point, the 3-9X32 Bushnell is from the "Elite" series.

Does this mean this might actually be somewhat decent, even for a $45 scope?

Disregard my last. I read the website incorrectly, it is not part of the "Elite" series.

Even so, anyone know anything on it?
