What do you guys use for large game archery hunting? I've heard that mechanical may fly better, but also that they have an increased chance of malfunction. It makes sense. I'm trying to decide for a possible upcoming black bear hunt. I've never killed anything with a bow.

Mechanicals do fly better. Try the RAGE 2 blade, they really leave a great blood trail!

This is what I use http://www.g5outdoors.com/#sec_tekan . They fly great with out having to retune the bow to the braod head. I shoot a ton and these are the best I have found. I also have never had one fail to open on a target or and game. I shot a squirll the end of last hunting season on the ground and it opened on the squirll so they open pretty fast when something is hit. I love'em.

I've used the same old 3 blade fixed Thunderhead 100's for over 20 years. Killed lots-o-critters too. No problem with flight on a properly tuned bow. The K.I.S.S. theory applies, IMO.

B-N-B dose your parctice tips fly like the thunder heads? I use TH's untill this year but couldn't get the same from shot to shot with the new set up. All were close but not what I was looking for. I gave muzzy,TH,and a few others a try and went with the tekens and never looked back with this set I have. Bows are like guns in what you shoot and they like what they like.

Yep,you gotta use what works for you. I'm like b-N-b. Been using TH 100's for 20+ yrs and I've been able to get them to shoot with my field points on every bow I've had. Also been around ALOT of Muzzies and will say that if you can't your bow to shoot them somethings not right with the bow. As far as what to use for black bear? A couple guys I know that hunt them in Canada switch from their older type mechanicals to fixed. They say they don't want Murphy and his law to show up. |

Shooting a bear with an arrow is the last place I want equipment failure, it just doesn't read good on a headstone ya know. "Here lies Bob died from a bear mauling because of equipment failure"

I'll NEVER hunt bears wit a bow EVER AGAIN..... 4 hours in the tree tops of N Ga. is once too many. Any longer and I would have started growing feathers, and hooting.

i shoot crimson talons, they seem to work pretty well on deer, and they fly a lot like my practice tips do.

I like the fixed G5 Montec heads. I've been able to get them to shoot to the same POI as my field points out of my bows. A buddy of mine uses them too, and has had the same experience. I like the fact that they are 1 piece, so there is nothing that can go wrong.
I've had good success with Muzzy broadheads in the past, though experience has shown me they aren't as tough as the Montecs. I have nothing fundamentally against the mechanical heads, and they are more likely than most fixed heads to shoot the same as field points. I do know a hunting buddy once was a big believer in the NAP Spitfire mechanical and used them for years with success. One incident with less than complete penetration and a blade that broke off caused him to lose confidence in the Spitfire, so he too switched to the Montec. Logic tells me that if some of the energy from impact is required to open the blades, this would seem to rob some of the energy needed for penetration, even if only slightly. The design and sharpness of the head is equally important for penetration, so that doesn't necessarily mean a mechanical won't penetrate well, and I've personally seen some that do. I don't think penetration is an issue as long as you have decent kinetic energy from your bow, and I also don't think it's an issue on deer sized animals with the average adult hunting bow and hunting weight arrows. Perhaps it isn't an issue with any animal; I don't know. What I do know is that usually the simpler something is, the less likely it is of failing, and things that adhere to the K.I.S.S. principle give me more confidence. The only disadvantages I see to the Montec is that they are pretty expensive, and once they become dull, you have to manually resharpen them, since they are 1 pc and don't have replaceable blades. But, that isn't too hard to do using a flat diamond impregnated stone. |

Well said buddy. I want to try the montec just to see how they fly but I love the Tekens. I stuck one thru a pine tree last year ranged from my stand @62 yards. The Teken opened when it hit the tree rat and continued thru the 4+ inch pine. I unscrewed the head and pulled the arrown out of the tree. The knock point of the arrow cracked but that happens. I was floored at how well the Teken held up did not break. Oh and getting an arrow out a pine tree will give you asteroids.

I use mechanical for deer hunting, but for bear I'd want a good fixed.

Same here. They've never let me down. I think I started using them around 1989 or thereabout. You need to spend some time shooting with your broadheads, and keep a journal; so you know what they'll do in the field. I even used to practice from a platform in my backyard so I was used to shooting downward toward my target. |

for bear hunting i think a fixed blade design would be best choice, starts cutting on impact.rothar snuffer was always real popular with bear hunters. good strong design and flies well. i think magnus makes it now

Little late seeing this. I like the G5 Montec as well. Will all the guiding I have done, the only elk I saw get away was with a mechanical. They seem too unreliable on the thicker hides of elk or bear. I would stay with a fixed blade if it were me.

You must have a different group of bears. Not sure "blood trail" is what we need here.
