As I have mentioned before I recently bought a Rem 700 Stainless SPS in 223 that I want worked over. The first thing I need to address is the stock issue.

Is the factory synthetic stock worth getting glass/pillar bedded or do I need to buy a replacement stock? The Remington website says the stock is new and improved “Improved, ergonomically designed synthetic stock”.

If I do need another stock can I get one that won’t need bedding or do they all need to be bedded? My thinking is, if I can offset the cost of a new stock if needed with forgoing a bedding job that would help the budget for this project.

BTW, I will use this rifle for groundhog and coyote hunting.

Thanks,
Sam

The factory Rem stocks I've seen lately have sucked. So, if you rebedded it, you'd still have a somewhat crappy stock, with a free floated barrel, right?

I'd restock that son of a pup, but thats me. Not sure I'd pay McMillan $$$ to get one, but others make fine aftermarket stocks for that rifle. Manners or Stockade stocks come to mind.
Yes, you'll probably need to rebed another stock as well, or have it done.

How about if I can find a stock with an aluminum block or chassis, i.e. H-S Precision, Bell & Carlson, etc. would I still need to bed?

Thanks,

Sam

B&C makes a nice stock with the aluminum chassis for the 700.

I've thought the same thing recently and I think the problem can be boiled down to this question: "Is 0.75 to 1" MOA good enough for you and the purpose you're using it for???"

I've held a SPS-V (and a VTR...same stock but different colours) and tried to flex the fore-end (it seems Remington recently upgraded the stocks on SPS-V's as the one I held only just flexed but the one I held when they first came out flexed a hell of a lot more).

I also asked a friend about his one and seeing the review of the SPS-V on Sniper Central, I just came to the conclusion that I couldn't justify buying a aftermarket stock for it, atleast in the short term.

I bed every stock on every rifle I own, even those with aluminum bedding blocks (in which case, I only skim bed over the aluminum).

SamC, I would take what Rem says in their adverts with a pinch of salt. I had accuracy issues on the varmint model. According to Rem this was the "most accurate production rifle".
When taken on about this, they stated that they only guaranteed 1 MOA accuracy. Now in my book that is not the "most acurate..."

If you have concerns about the stock, change it for the best you can afford, and bed the sucker. Only way to go.

I am in the process of pillar bedding most of my rifles.  Pillar bed first and then epoxy skim coat.  Pillar bedding when done correct means no flex in your action when screwed in to your stock.  If is is not pillar bedded then you are flexing your action to conform to your stock.  You can buy washers for the HS aluminum bed stocks to make them pillar bedded.  I have 2 SPS stainless and one SPS varmint and those stocks have been removed.  You can find decent stocks available for decent prices in the classifieds for online auctions.

I had a SPS stock on 7mm Magnum,it looks nice but is very very light weight and hollow. The gun wasnt nice to shot at all even with a recoil pad, so i changed the stock out to a laminated one.
The solid stock and extra weight makes the gun more "user" friendly..

Thanks for the help guys, I was hoping to get away with pillar/glass bedding my existing synthetic stock but I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for a deal on a decent stock to have bedded.

I would have to ask the question, how does the rifle shoot without anything being done to it?  Of course, this is assuming that all other aspects of the rifle and ammunition have been optimized to your satisfaction and to the level use will use the rifle for on a regular basis.  What level of accuracy are you looking for?  Does the rifle move it's point of impact with off hand shots?  If the rifle shoots to your satisfaction and the poi does not change with off hand shots, then maybe you should leave it alone.  Other wise, your money can be the limit to what you would like to achieve.  Simple pillar bedding with your present stock can simplify your present situation and improve accuracy to a level that is a lot of time acceptable to many rifleman, for the purposes they purchased the rifle for.  I would caution you, that often we get into the habit of spending a lot of time, money and effort in seeking an almost impossible goal of ultimate accuracy as well as just for the sport and hobby of it all.  Consumption is fine if it is your job or life, but just a little warning.
