I too prefer the Win. safety over the Rem., especially on a rifle for a young or novice shooter. I currently have my eye on a push feed one in .243 Win. with a full 24" barrel at a local pawn shop. It's in real nice shape and I keep hearing it call my name and saying "buy me". Anybody else ever have this problem?

Yeah, that is a real nice rifle! I had it narrowed down to a Model 70 XTR in .300 Weatherby and a Ruger No. 1 in .270 Weatherby at a gun show one time. The Ruger won. Same guy had both guns; traded a Ruger M77 stainless laminated .223 Rem with a TrAShCO Mag IV 50 5x20x50 even for it. I still have it. Wish I could have got both.

I was in a gun shop yesterday and even the salesman was paying out Remington! I asked him his opinion on which one to get...a Savage 10 FCLP-K or a Remington SPS Varmint and he said definitely the Savage and that Remington is only running these days on their reputation.

i don't like winchester's safety. i have only owned one and it was always getting hung and moving.the rifle shot good but the chamber was way over size. real bummer for reloading.

Sounds like your safety was just poorly fitted so it hung up on the milled slot in the firing pin extension. I've seen some like this, and that problem can be pretty easily fixed so the safety operates very slickly. That's not a fault of the basic design, just in the execution of the design. |

My guess is that in a poll of rifle loonies, the Winchester three position safety would do extremely well. Sam |

FWIW In the February issue of Eastman’s’ Hunting Journal the new Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather gets a very good grade. The only thing they criticized was that according to them, the hinged floor plate was a bit difficult & uncomfortable to open and the trigger while very good was set a bit heavy by the factory at 3 ¾ lbs. Some of the rifles they liked a little better, semi custom guns were about a pound lighter in trigger weight. BTW, I don't think there are too many rifles coming out of the factory with 2 3/4 lbs triggers, you have to adjust them to taste yourself. Sam |

i dont think anything under 4lbs is what i consider a good idea for a hunting rifle, but i live in a part of the country where its pretty cold during hunting season, so sometimes you wear gloves to shoot. a light trigger like the 2 3/4 lbs your talking about isnt a good idea.

I can live with a light trigger in a 22 or a varmint gun...but a crisp trigger of 3-4 lbs. is fine in a deer rifle....
