anyone have any experience with the winchetser model 70's. Are they good guns or at least comparable to the 700's?

Depends on how you define "good gun."  It's a personal preference thing -- whether you personally prefer the M70's design and features better than the M700.  On average, I haven't found M70's to be quite as accurate as the average M700, but they are very reliable rifles that will last several lifetimes.  But, out of the box production rifle accuracy is totally a crap shoot -- some shoot great, some don't.  It also depends on which M70 you're talking about (when it was made), as there have been 5 generations of them.  The current M70 made by FN in SC is as good as any mid priced production rifle out there quality-wise, and has an "improved" trigger vs. earlier M70 generations.  I like certain models of the M70, but I'm not too fond of those made during the mid 1960's to late 1970's/early 1980's time period personally.

I have both Remington m 700 and Winchester m70 rifles in a variety of calibers and I have had a few by both companies that wouldn't shot factory ammo for crap, that was my main reason for starting reloading ammo.I have a winchester 70 classic sporter LT in 25-06 that will put factory 85gr ballistic tips in a hole the size of a dime at a hundred yards. My 700CDL in the same caliber  with the same ammo shots a group of three inches.I personally like both makes of rifles, you can get a good rifle from them or a bad one,a friend of mine just purchased a 700 CDL with no rifling in the barrel

Thirty years ago a friend of mine who owned a gun store in Douglas, Wyoming had a fella come in with a Remington 700 that wouldn't shoot.  It, too, had no rifling in the barrel.  Just a screw up.  Yikes.

when he took the rifle back to where he purchased it, the gun shop said it must have been made the first thing Monday morning or done on a Friday afternoon. My friend asked him what he meant by that and the guy told him that on Monday you are still hung over and thinking about that girl from the weekend and on Friday afternoon you are thinking about the upcoming weekend and the fun you are going to have all over again with the same girl or someone else. They contacted Remington and he was able to walk out the door with a new rifle [ this one had rifling in it].They told him they have seen rifles come in with the wrong bolts, packing cartons not matching the contents etc from all the manufacturers over the years [thirty-two years]
