I have on layaway a 1950 Schmidt-Rubin K-31 rifle in 7.5x55 Swiss. I am going to put a scope on it and I am seeking recommendations. This a rifle capable of great accuracy out to 1000 yards/meters and so my scope should meet those demands. I want a scope with a 50mm objective because I have older eyes, behind glasses, and I want the greater light drawing ability. I also want this scope to be less than $600. It will have to be mounted in front of the bolt, therefore it may need a long eye relief. What qualifies as a long eye relief anyway?

Is it fair to ask about Alpen Apex scopes here?

I think for a scope that has normal eye relief you will need something like the S&K Weaver style that extends the rail back over the bolt (3170).
Reaction time is a factor...

The S&K mount replaces the rear iron sights just in front of the bolt. If a normal eye relief scope is mounted over that it will extend back over the bolt. The difficulty there is the S-R  rifle ejects spent cases straight up, not to the right. The S&K mount is really intend for Scout type scopes, I think.

Ahhh, so THAT'S why there are hardly any over-the-bolt type mounts. I was wandering if a William's side mount with HCO rings would still do the trick. Anyone have experience with William's side mounts on a Schmidt Rubin?
