I have a SS10X42 side parallax on .223 bolt action and looking to buy a .338 WSM and rebarrel to a .338 Lapua and wondering will another SS10x42 give enough sight distance because I love my SS.

There is a larger issue. Look at the receiver... If it a short action you won't be able to rebarrel for that cartridge. The receiver may not even be suitable for that cartridge pressure.

Good points, Billy!
Sounds like that project may require more research.

I'd hate for him to do all the planning and purchase a barrel, only to find out it won't work with his present receiver and bolt group.

I hear you.
It can often be made to work, even through a short action (if you don't mind feeding the cartridges into the chamber one at a time by removing the bolt every time!),
....BUT I really think the Lapua is simply too much cartridge for most conventional sporter actions.
It really requires a receiver sized and designed for it from the ground up, stout enough to free-float a heavy 28-inch-plus barrel.
Just my opinion.

Its either going to be a Savage 111, or a 116 I wouldn't consider that much pressure on a short action. Another concern I have is the size of the bolt face and the difference in the diameter of the face of the Lapua compared to the Winchester round, (and I actually only shoot my .17HMR and .223 one round at a time anyway, never thought of it until you brought it up)

For what do you need the lapua? Ammo for that beast is about $100 per 20 rounds, FYI.
I much prefer a good 300 Win Mag, enough power to do anything I need to do, not so much that it hurts to shoot or is prohibitively expensive to shoot.
But, in the end, get what you want, and the 10X will hold up fine. I'd consider looking at the 10X HD, you will appreciate the increase in glass quality and the mil turrets. A Lapua at 100 yards is like a Ferrari in traffic: it's still fun to drive, but not fun-est.

Your absolutely right I'm sure 300 Win Mag would give me more than enough max. eff. range but this will probably be my last long range build my wife will let me get away with and when oversees I got ruined shooting the .50 and I probably just want way more power than I need, and I like to build it myself instead of paying seven grand for it.

I believe you will be able to purchase the Savage Action for 338 LM sometime this Summer. You should contact them and ask for certain. I am of the opinion that the standard mag action may not handle the pressures of the Lapua cartridge. I know for a certainty that the bolt head will not fit that cartridge.
