HI, Im on the market for a new (long range) gun. Iv been religiously studying ballistics and found that the 300 win mag, 300wsm, and 270wsm are about the flattest shooting you can get. IV heard that good long range shooters will choose a smaller caliper gun to compensate for the hard kick, and just deal with the ballistic drop. What are your top long range (300-600) yd calipers and why.

*note* the gun will be used in deer hunting situations so it must have alittle umpth behind it to knock em down.

300-600 yards I would not consider as long range.  Best long range calibers are 338LM 408 Cheytac and the big 50s.

While I agree the big calibers listed above are better for "long range".  I think all are a little on the heavy side for the intended deer hunting in question.

My top long range deer gun is a 7mm Rem Mag loaded with Sierra Game King bullets in 160 grain. It is not over kill for deer and it shoots very flat at the ranges mentioned.

Agreed, anything from the fast 6.5s to 7mms would be my choice.

i use the .264 win mag with 140gr sierra game kings, because im an odd duck. the 7mm mag is probably a very good choice, its fairly economical in the "magnum" lineup to own and shoot, and its also very versatile. you can use the same 160gr bullets you use for deer on elk, mountain sheep and bear if you want to.

Hunter, I guess we're goth odd ducks, I also like the .264, though I'd love to have a 7stw.

I have a .308 Norma Magnum.  I like it so much better than my 7mm Mag, that I sold my 7mm Mag and went totally with the Norma Magnum for the past couple of years.  My currnet load is the 180g Nosler Accubond and Iam working on a 165g.  With the 180g Bullets, you get basically the same ballistics as the .300Win Mag.

why in your opinion are the 308's better? Ballistically numberous calipers are far superior in all aspects. Not knocking it just clueless.

I've shot the .308 Normas and I will have to admit they are one sweet round, but man are they expensive for us poor folks.
