Is anyone using this?? http://www.lifelock.com/
I used my credit card online yesterday to buy my deer and elk permits for this year and had my number stolen as I got a call from Cabelas Visa fraud department today with questions about a bunch of not typical charges on my card. All the charges started appearing after I made that purchase. Over $1000 worth of charges in about 15 hours. My computer is behind cisco network hardware and I scan it daily with malware and virus programs, which I have not found anything. Makes me think the Utah DWR has something going on with their site or the company that hosts their site. But anyway, I have been looking into the Lifelock for a while now as this is making me consider it more. I working in banking so have seen some pretty crazy stuff happen with identity theft and just wondering if anyone has any experience with using this program. |

only problem we see with lifelock is that everytime you need to have yoru credit pulled you have to call and get them to unlock it and then call back to lock it.

There are so many ways to steal data.
First, It could very well be on your computer. There are too many ways to list on what it could be. But don't think all of your scanning software can catch it.
Second, it could be on the DWR servers. Most times large institutional sites like that have some of the better tools to prevent that, BUT, not always. It even includes hardware and proprietary network coding. I have worked with Visa and Mastercard hardware. Very slick stuff and very controlled. But once it leaves their hardware it goes on the Public network aka: the internet. Could even be an employee selling the numbers. If they are PCI compliant then there would be a audit path and strictly controlled access for them to followup on. If a non-PCI compliancy exposure has occurred then you have GOVT backing for reclaiming your losses.
Third, it could be the internet, with address hijacking. Very popular among coupon, porn and gambling sites. AGAIN, that is just one way on the internet, there are many...
Just like any other crime out there, no matter how you come up with ways to prevent it, criminals will figure out a way around it. The internet is the wild wild west, laws are vague and weak. Prosecution is difficult.
I will give you and anybody else out there the same advice I give all of my family, use at your own risk. If you have to use a type of electronic payment DO NOT use your Debit cards and DO NOT use a SS number for anything. Its still a risk, but you minimize your exposure. Using a CC with a good financial institute that has fraud detection and consumer coverage is the best route. They will detect, stop and bear the brunt of the theft. CHECK your bank on what you are liable for on your debit cards. Most banks will make you cover the first $50 or $100 dollars. The bad part is your acct is frozen and usually emptied for weeks until they figure this out.

I just had Chase call me up about a week ago their fraud department called me and asked If I had made a purchase from Indian Hills something and I said no I had not and they asked if my last purchase was at Scheels and had the amount and that was correct so I think someone got the card number from the gun dept at Scheels. Anyway they cancled my card and are supposed to send me another card. Its going to get so bad eventually they will have to change the system. Makes you miss the good old days where they billed you and you mailed them a check. |

I realize it could be my computer. But I also use a smart swipe credit card scanner, so if they got it from that they are damn good. It encrypts everything that is shown on my PC so I feel pretty good about my end. But just to be safe I completely wiped out my computer right after I got the call my cabelas and installed new hard drives and OS as I have been meaning to do that anyway for maintainence purposes.
I was just curious about adding more protection to myself in this day and age. Thanks for the info so far guys. |

If you are using smart card I believe that is the swiper that plugs into your computer? That encrypts your card number right at the scanner. Before the data even hits your computer. If they are beating that, thats pretty darn good.

you know a contractor i know around here told me a funny story about people who wont take cash. this guys brother is a used car salesman, he travels all over the united states to go to car auctions. he took a red eye flight into phoenix arizona to make it to an auction. he got off the plane and went to go rent a car. he went to an unknown car rental company at the airport. he told them he wanted to rent a car for a couple of days. they said ok, all we need is a credit card and you are good to go. well the car salesman didnt do credit cards, and in fact he brought a brief case with $125K to buy cars at the auction. he told the clerk that he didnt have a credit card all he had was cash, they said well then we cant rent you a car then. he said well fine then i would like to buy one of your cars, and was getting ready to count out $15k in cash and they stopped him and said oh you cant buy one of our cars without a credit car either. dipsh*ts i tell you! |

It might even be that someone brute force guessed the credit card number and even the security code on the back. I had a business Visa credit card compromised last year and Wells Fargo called me about a bunch of charges made in Israel. I rarely use that card for anything and was promptly issued a new one.

My neighbor just yesterday told me about her card number getting ripped off. She went out for breakfast, used a card she said she only uses about 6 times a year. Two weeks later she got contacted from her banks fraud department. Charges in Canada... The waitress at the diner had written the card number down and was giving the numbers to her boyfriend who was selling the card numbers for cash. I guess this is common in the food services industry. They recommend you contact the mgr and let them know you suspect it.
