I am currently shooting a Browning A Bolt stainless stalker 7mag--close to 15 years! Anyway, what is the downside of an A Bolt in these two calibers (375 or 338 WM), and what other choices do you like? My preference is stainless and synthetic.I have looked at the Remington, Browning, and Savage--the application is moose/bear in Alaska and perhaps one day to travel to the dark continent.
Pyro's Oprah is nice, but wrong handed for me!

I like both calibers, but if africa is remotely possible go .375. I actually have both 338 and 375 browning abolts and like them both. One is a medallion and the other a stalker. I'm partial to wood, but synthetic probably makes more sense.

thats a pretty good price, the brass for them is a little spendy over $1 a piece, but the performance is pretty impressive.

I almost bought a lefty .300 RUM last year for $400....when Sportman's Warehouse closed in Roanoke. If you look around and don't mind waiting, you can find a really good deal on those big calibers. It's not something just anyone is going to want, given the caliber and the fact the gun is a lefty.

Hunter a buddy of mine has a 300rum with laminated stock and I didn't think the recoil was all that bad, considering the 90 some odd grains of powder. Though when I shot it, we were sighting it in with 165gr bullets, he likes complete bullet expansion/fragmentation on white tails. I stopped arguing with him about controlled expansion, its useless.

ive shot the 300rum too with 180gr bullets, and it wasnt much worse than my H&H but the .338 is a different beast with a heavier bullet, you start throwing a 225gr bullet at 3000fps plus out of a 8lb rifle and it cant be real pleasant.

That may also be a great alternative, 375 ruger Alaskan. I haven't shot a ruger in some years now, but from what I understand, they have made great strides in improving their product line.
