Posted earlier on the Rifle Scope section before I saw Varmint Scopes, sorry....im a newb.
Anyways, bought a new Savage 12 Long Range Precision Varminter in .204, and looking for a scope for daylight use on paper and pdogs later. Im looking to not break the bank, and get the most glass for the cash.
My first thought is a Mueller 8-32x44 Target Dot because of the lower cost, but higher mag with side focus. Anyone own one of these that can comment?
Im open to other suggestions as well. Currently I own Elite 4200 and 3200s, Nikon Buckmasters and Pro Staff, Burris FFIIs and some other misc ones.
Would I be ok with the Mueller or should I set aside more cash and get say a Monarch or even a lower VX3 in 4-14 without the AO?
thanks for the help

Well.....Taking the plunge and ordering the Mueller 8-32x44. Im hoping that even if it only works clear up to 25, with the side focus it will still do more then I need.
Id love to spend more, but will put the rest toward extra ammo, nice burris signature rings, and another bipod....
If anyones interested I will relay thoughts when it arrives.

Very happy so far with Mueller, but just initial thoughts. Range time hopefully this weekend if weather complies.

For anyone that cares.....took it out to range today. Mounted it on LRPV using Burris Signature Zee rings.
Today's weather was light snow and overcast, with light tail wind and about 25 degrees. Sighting in I actually had to pull the round quite a bit to the right, wasnt expecting that so I will have to check for mounting issues, normally windage is much closer, at least in my experience.
Anyway, the Mueller performed very well overall. Did half of a box test, adjustments tracked well. I would say the range indicators on the side focus are a bit off, and I had to tweak the side focus at higher mag, but was able to have full field of view at all power settings.
Clarity was somewhat hard to judge because of weather, but it did very well today for clarity and picture, and I would expect even better with some sunlight. Happy with the purchase, now well see how longevity does.

Since you are asking questions here, I will assume that you're a bit more interested than the average Joe and that you might be a bit more critical than the herd.
I have a Mueller 4.5-14 APV sitting on my AR-15, while I save for a better scope. I've posted my impressions of it. Frankly, I bet you will eventually become disappointed with any of the Mueller scopes except possibly the Tac II. Here's why - they're all in the sub-$250 price range. You have to make a bunch of compromises in order to get lots of bling like high magnification, side-focus and exposed turrets into that price. Since I posted about my APV a couple weeks ago, I did some more critical evaluation. I set it at 8X and set my AR-15 next to my Remington 700 with a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8. I sighted in on a far hillside. With the APV, I viewed a pine tree very nicely. With the Leupold, I could see the gaps in the branches and what was peeking through from behind the tree. I accidentally discovered that I could match the quality of what I saw in the Mueller if I accidentally left my smudged and fingerprinted see-through Butler Creek Blizzard lens cap down on the front of my Leupold scope. That's a pretty damning discovery, IMHO. I'm guessing that my experience is pretty typical for most of the Mueller scope line. I'm sure that they're "bright" enough (whatever that means) but they're all pretty hazy. |

I have a rem 700 in .204 and i have the monarch on it and i love it out to 300yds. I would feel very good about shooting a small pig out to 300 with that set up. My monarch is a 3x12 and it is more than enough scope for the .204
