Hi based on suggestions on this forum...Thanks!...I purchased a TR24R from SWFA. Now I need to zero it in. Can anyone help me out with some basic how to's?

My range is limited to 100 yards. Should I zero at that distance on 4x?

Should I zero at 50 yards like iron sights?

My inclination is to zero at 100 yards but clearly I am new at this.

Thanks!

I zeroed mine at 50yds for a 200yd zero. Although when I confirmed the zero at 200 it was a little off (can't remember if I was high or low) due to a different mechanicle off-set from standard open sights, but it was close by a couple of minutes.

Thanks. How far off are you at 100?

My recommendation is to bore site at 25 if possible (looking down the bore, with the rifle on a stable surface (or the upper, if it is an AR) center the target in the bore, then center the target in the scope reticle - assuming the rifle is oriented as it would be for shooting.)

Once you are on paper and "roughed in" at 25, go out to 100 for final zero.  When you get good at bore sighting, you can skip the 25-yard part and go straight to 100.

You might need a spotter or higher powered scope for shooting at 100, depending on conditions and bullet diameter.

That is a damn fine scope, have fun with it and let us know how zeroing goes.

I get it roughly centered at 25 then go to 100 then to 200 and usually zero at 200 which is typically the range I prefer to work at.  You need to make a balistics chart and keep notes so you know how to hold at different distances.  Tape info inside your flip up lens caps.

Hi it is 223/556.

Thanks for the replies.  I took it to the range today.  Sighted in at 25 to get the  rounds on paper then out to 100 yards.  Forgot my rest so I wrapped my coat over a plastic jug and improvised one.  Group was loose at 100 yards but I got it going.  I definitely need a spotting scope!  Was going to post a pic of my 50 yard target but can't figure out how.

As I found shooting their 2.5-10 on an AR10: the post reticle is not best for extreme accuracy, but is superb for quick target engagement.

Don't worry too much if the groups are a little larger than you want.  In low light, its balls!

When you zero cover the fiber optic to reduce the glow and you will find the point is sharper and more precise.   M-16 sights are typically zeroed at 300 meters so a 200 or 300 yd zero makes a lot of sense.  Check your balistics for the specific ammo you use.

Thanks for the tips.  I can't wait to get back to the range.  This was at 50 yards off my improvised (not so steady ) rest.

At 100?

I prefer to be a little high at 100 rather than low, but that is preference.

Also, something to consider with your reticle (a great reticle, by the way): if you shoot using the tip as a precise aiming point, be sure, when the adrenalin starts pumping, that you still use the tip.  If you float the target "in" the triangle (which I tend to do in speed shots or quick shots), everything will sail high.

However you line up the reticle and target, do it the same every time.

Enjoy!  And post a pic of the rig.  We here at OT are gun-porn addicts! ("gun-porn" being guns, very different from gun AND porn.)

Will post a pic of the rig in the AM.  The target was at 50 yards.

Why is that?  I've never understood this claim.  For holdover, I can see, but for dead-on aim...

I've been able to get bughole accuracy with mine.  The triangle terminates in a sharp point at 12:00, which is what you're aiming with.  The sharp point is finer than any reticle line or dot can possibly be and doesn't obscure the smallest target, since all but the very tip of the triangle is below your point of aim.  Think of the reticle as the same as the mouse pointer on your computer when clicking on an icon.  You can touch the very tip of the pointer on a period or the smallest pixel you can see on the screen and still not obscure it, yet at the same time, the body of the pointer (the triangle itself) is still very visible for quick shots.
