Chris,

I asked the Weaver repair service and they didn't answer the question for me.

My old Weaver V12B went back to the original Weaver and the ocular section was replaced, the adjustments worked on (loose), and the focus ring replaced. The new Weaver outfit did some work on it too. I got it new and the lenses are in great shape.

I am wondering if how long a scope will last? As long as the parts are available. It's a good old scope even though it is heavy. It has been on a Rugger 77 30/06, .243 varmint rifle and .22 rimfire, so it has had lots of use. They are bringing $90.00-$200 used on Ebay. I can't see anything in that quality range to replace it with.

I was also wondering if you could clarify something about the SS. I believe you recommended someone buy a scope with lens covers as the SS adjustments aren't covered. I should think any tactical scope should keep out dirt and water in a combat situation. The Unertls don't have covers that I am aware of.

Thanks.

Hard to say how long something will last, especially when it is outdated.  There are just too many variables.....but based on my experience and your input I would say its good to go at least another 10 years.

Dust, dirt and water are no problem for a mil spec scope.  The problem is someone using this type of scope for hunting that never plans to adjust for bullet drop.  The exposed knobs become a liability because they can accidentally get turned.  Most hunters sight their rifle in a little high at 100 and hold over for longer ranges or get closer to the target.  If you are not familiar with the art of using a mil dot reticle and "come ups" and you don't plan on learning then there is no need getting a scope with those features. - that's what I meant by the comment you are referring too.
