I had my smith mopunt my rings and lap them in. When I put my scope in
the rings, and tighten down the hex bolts, there is a small, but still
there, gap, maybe 1mm between the top part and the ring bases.
Is this normal? They are both high dollar I just didnt think it should have this. |

I'm assuming you mean the two parts of the ring are not matting upon torque down. Whether rings "mate" depends on the brand, very few do these days. Old Burris rings would "mate" every time. While "unmated" rings don't look as good there is nothing wrong functionally. Warne and Conetrol and alot of the new "Tactical" rings mate because of the way they are made. Weaver rings never mate. Obviously when one sees them in an advertisment all of them are "mating". I wish the makers would state if they mate, but this would probably break some type of pornography laws.

There will be a small gap at the top of Warne Rings because not all tubes are the exact same size. Most ring companies will sit a torque value to follow, thus leaving a small gap of some sort where they mate.... There is nothing worse than crushing the tube on a high dollar scope.

What brand mounts are they?
Sounds like your "smith" didn't run that bar through them enough times. |
