I'm looking for some ideas for a scope to go on a 10/22. What I'm interested in is a low power variable, starting as close to 1x as possible but no more than 2x, up to at least 4x (not that more on the upper end would bother me). I'd prefer a duplex reticle, weatherproof and durable. Don't need AO or even repeatable adjustments - this rifle will be zeroed, and probably never adjusted again. I'd like to keep the cost under $200.
Any suggestions? I have a pretty good idea of what's out there for high power variables with much bigger price tags, but I haven't been following what's new in low power scopes at all. Thanks Kevin |

I have one of these and it is a 30mm tube so is larger that you would initially think but quite solid and the illumination is a nice plus. The new really cool stuff in low power variables is the Trijicon Accupoints and compact ACOG scopes but they are a lot more but their tritium & fiber optic illumination is always turned on so always ready. Also have this and it is really the right size for a 22

The 2-7 Leupold Rimfire is a fine scope that has good glass, reliable and is trim enough to compliment a standard 10/22. Depending on when your Ruger was made, and the finish, the Leo also comes in matte and gloss. http://swfa.com/Leupold-Rimfire-Airgun-Scopes-C113.aspx

Weaver rimfire scopes are surprisingly nice, considering their modest price tags.

I know that this doesn't adhere to your original request for low power, but I'm completely happy with this scope.

I think the weaver rimfires offer a very good value for the money.

That sighttron would be nice if it was paralaxed down to 50 yards.

you can get the 2-7 legend for about the same price as the weaver right now, is the weaver still a better choice? they seem popular. |

I'm not familiar for the 2-7 legend but I believe it's a centerfire scope. Centerfire scopes are set to be parallax free at 100yds while rimfire scopes are set for 50yds. Honestly I really like Weaver Classic scopes.

I keep reading about centerfire scopes on rimfires and can't tell if parallax makes a practical difference. My .22 is a squirrel gun, I'm not aiming for one hole groups, but I do appreciate serious accuracy for longer head shots.

The shorter the distance the more parallax shows up.If it were me I'd buy the Weaver and not just because it's a rimfire scope. Weaver Classics are good scopes.

I appreciate the help. I'll have to go take a look at one of those weavers, seems like a strong current in their direction. Thanks.

I beleive the Leupold 2-7 rimfire comes with fine cross hairs and 60yard parrallax. |

In case it is useful:
Just received one of the Weaver 2-5 rimfires from SWFA. It seems like a nice scope. Eye relief is really short, especially at 7. Recoil is not a problem of course, but it mounts much further back than the scope I had on there. Glass seems equal to my sightron sii, maybe a little crisper. Finish is a little sloppy--the weaver badge is attatched a little kittywumpus and there's some asymetry around the saddle area's curves. But very solid feeling. We'll see how it hunts.
