When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 C. The Russians used a pencil.

Yeah, but the billions spent developing this pen.... HAS BENEFITTED ICK!!!!!!!
Actually.... that is known as the "Fisher Space Pen".... and I carry them every day.
Yeah, a pencil is OK... but it doesnt work for signing those waxy credit card receipts. As advertised these pens even write on that kind of paper...other pens do not... and neither does a PENCIL. On more than one occasion I was able to utilize the pen when others failed.
For example, Just today at 20ºF weather I was able to take one of these pens out of my console and jot down dimensions and notes on a building survey. A normal pen doesn't do that when it is that cold, other pens simply do not write when at that temperature. Since the notes are permanent and must be in pen.... a pencil would no do.
Furthermore, these pens collapse on themselves so 1. no leakage EVEN WHEN GONE THROUGH WASH and 2. no poke in the chest from a long pointy pen and 3. They fit in your pants pocket so no NERD POCKET PROTECTOR!
Here is Pyro before he converted to the Space Pen... when he used the "old style" pens like Ed still uses:
