I am going to unload a couple of my rifles that I simply will never be able to use for their intended purpose ( Elk rifles I bought for a hunt that an untimely car accident has put an end to ) to make room for a new addition. I can't seem to make up my mind which one to get and looking for some input on a choice . The contenders :
1) 308 AR style rifle .. I have 2 other AR's ( 223 and 7.62x39) that I enjoy - which is an upside , I familiar with the workings and the controls are easy to use ..But that same familiarity makes this choice just a touch old hat .
2) M1A - Stainless "loaded" edition . I used to have a Chinese copy that actually shot pretty well . I am drawn to the heritage ,& would only consider a Springfield this time around . Not as edgy as today's more modern choices , but then again neither am I.
3) PTR-91 copy of HK's 308 rifle.. durable and accurate .. I haven't given one a try before, but have read good things.
so - which one ???? OR something else ?? Edited by martin3175 - December/26/2009 at 12:03 |

I like the AR 308 idea..... You could do something different with this one. Different than what you did with the others. Besides, you can never have too many of this type of rifle. Why not get one in 338 Rem? DPMS makes a stout and accurate platform. Get the longer barrel, and the light weight composite front tube. The possibilities are so many.

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and got a lot more recommendations for the AR-10.

I own choices 1 and 2. #1 is a box full of bipolar, ADD, ADHD, sczhitzoid quirks.

As an owner of an HK 91 for over thirty years I think that clone is an abomination. An M4 type collapsible stock, that no doubt contains the recoil spring required for the roller lock mechanism, looks gross. That thing is wrong. Even if a clone, get one with the original paratrooper stock.
The AR .308 and the M1A are very nice. If it's a good one like a Knight, I choose the AR in a nanosecond. |

A good friend of mine used to own an original HK91 back in the day. He's still
kicking himself for selling it and I don't blame him; they've banned here since around '89.

The photo was just a sample-- Atlantic Guns here in here in Maryland has a wide selection . I haggled with a guy on a Springfield SAR 8 just a few months ago at a show .It seemed well put together , but he wouldn't budge off of $1600 ( he's had it since new and it had seen 300 + rounds ). |

The PTR 91 is actually a well-made rifle, but I agree, put on the HK style stock and make a paper weight out of that M-4 style stock. It belongs on an AR only.
