Just curious about the Vortex Viper Scopes.  I need a new hunting scope for my 308 and am intrigued by the vortex line.  I don't need a TOP dollar scope, as I would like to stay around the $350 mark.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Whats your distances and light conditions for your hunting?  Are you wanting a "tactical" hunting scope so you can target shoot too of is this strictly a hunting gun?

I was also looking at the Viper when I was looking for one for my 223WSSM. Narrowed it to that and the Nikon monarch but I went with the monarch only because already had one nikon and didn't know much about the Viper's.  Have seen some good reviews on them and they are offering a $50 rebate until the end of the year.

For the money, Vortex is a good scope.
Bushnell 4200 is around the same $$ and is also a good scope.  The Rainguard on Bushnell works well.  Their 3-9 is a great deal at about $300.

For midrange scopes I find myself recommending Vortex Viper, Bushnell Elite 420 and Sightron S2 Big Sky 90%+ of the time.

All are good scopes and would work well.  Vortex' rebate makes them a very good deal right now.

This is just a hunting rifle.  Probably only need 40mm lens.

Personally I think the mid range scopes from Bushnell, Nikon, Leupold, Burris, Sightron, Zeiss and other are hard to beat. They are all very comparable and offer great features.  Some features are more important to others, but all of these scopes offer fantastic value. You really can't go wrong once you determine which personal features are most important to you.

There are better scopes like the S2 Big Sky or the 4200.

I put a Nitrex on a 300 win mag not long ago and it's working well, pretty darn good glass, good reticle, and no frills (just what I like).
Like there weren't enough to chose from already, LOL. Best wishes.
