I went down to Cabelas today to look over the Zeiss Conquest scopes - comparing the 3-9x40 MC to the 3.5-10x44 MC.  The 3.5-10 looks a 1/2" longer and although the FoV is supposedly greater, it looked smaller at the same powers as the 3-9.

Then I made the mistake of asking to look thru the Swarovski 3.5-10x42 Z3 - holy crap! It's shorter than the 3-9 Conquest which I liked. But looking thru the 3-9 Conquest (which lists a greater FoV), at 6 power compared to the Z3 at 6 power, the Swarovski has definately a larger FoV when looking at the same objects at the store - which I don't understand.  I've been retired for 6 1/2 years but may have to get a job at Walmart to save up some money.

I'm trying to decide whether this made my day or ruined it . . . .

Big mistake.

Lucky for you, it stopped there.  You could'a really screwed things up for yourself had you looked through a Zeiss Victory Diavari.

Conquest is a good scope, but getting great glass ruins the view through anything else that isn't great glass.

Both are great scopes and owning a conquest 3-9x40 is nothing to be ashamed of, I think it offers some of the best optics and eye relief at its price point.

I don't think you're helping this poor feller RC. He's going to need two jobs if he looks at one of those.Bucky

Please do not interpret my comments as negative toward the Conquest scopes, they are great scopes, I've owned a few.

As with all things, there is a continuum, and Conquest is toward the top of that scale; however, there are optics above it - and they can be noticeably sharper and brighter with better contrast and color fidelity.  That said, to get "noticably" better, you will pay "dramatically" more.

Conquest is a great scope and is doing a great job of dislodging Leupold from its "top dog" spot.  It's no slouch.

But, beware: if you can't afford more than Conquest, do NOT look through Swaro, Victory, S&B, and those with very expensive glass - because there is a difference.

The initial pain when ponying up for good optics will be offset by the satisfaction of owning them.

I bet you won't be sorry! Smile Swarovski is worth every nickel IMO.  I don't have any scopes but have a spotter and some bino's that are first class!

I do own a few good optics.... When I grow up, I want to own great optics. Most of the scopes I own have influenced friends purchases, A couple have wowed them. (Monarch X and IOR) These are the best I have, and as such they aren't really the greatest, just in the very good category. But if they end up being the best I ever own, that's good too. Maybe one day I'll be able to step up to a Hensoldt, or a S&B, or a Zeiss.. I know the Diavari is certainly a wow factor scope.   Juggle

Ed, your mouth is still hanging open 'cause you are old and drool a lot.  Has nothing to do with Swarovski.
