Looks really good to me. I usually send mine to a professional after I have botched in a do-it-yourself-attempt!
So I can appreciate the skill shown, great!

Thanks Wouter. Thanks Brandon. Doesn't even look like the same gun now does it?

Those old Remington autoladers were very popular here in the Northwoods in the Sixties and Seventies. Two out of three deer hunters seemed to have one. They developed a bit of a reputation for poor reliability from the guys who never bothered to clean and oil them.
But if cared for they worked fine and were often extremely accurate.

I like them, and yours is one of the nicest looking ones I've seen, Billy!

Your scope is mounted a little too high though!   Mouth Taped Shut

Thanks Ron. You know, I tried mounting the scope a tad lower, and it just wasn't comfortable for me. This gun is my "stalking" gun, and when I have to put it up there fast, with the lower mounts, I couldn't get on target as fast. Now the 30-06 Remmy the Leupold is mounted lower. I used to have the see thru rings on it for stalking prey and iron sight use. I did away with them and the irons on that one as well. I suppose using 50 mm objectives almost exclusively, and also shooting the M-16 has changed where the cheek wield is comfortable for me.

Very Nice Billy!!
You did a great job...
I have a 243  M 742 Woodmaster as well. Bought it in 1979 I think, it has not been shot but a few times, maybe 4 boxes of shells. It did go on a rafting trip and it looks as though it was a 10 year long one too. So mine needs refinishing as well. I have to send it to someone someday to see if they can get the shells to eject properly. It leaves a little shaving of brass and Im not sure whats up.. But I will send it to some one to fix then I will re-blue and refinish the stock as well.......I will probably just put a straight oil finish on it and thats about it, I prefer oil only as its always easy to touch up anytime you want...

Take Care
Julio...........

Thanks Julio......I have seen some of them that the bolt was so poorly machined that they would really damage the brass. Brandon knows too. Yours is probably in need of some chamber care.

Nice job, Billy!  It's great to breathe new life into a trusted rifle!  There's nothing like the pride of using a rifle you customized yourself!

Great job Bill! What did you use to strip the old finish off? I have to do the same thing to one of my old 870's and I would like to know how you were able to keep the checkering looking that good.

Nice work Billy, I've tried to do this once to a savage 10 stock, it is harder than it looks, especially sanding and cleaning up the checkering.  Mine didn't turn out as nice, but it is a fun and rewarding project.

Thanks Gents. It is an awful lot of work.
Doug, I used, or kwik strip, acetone, and I had to resort to using Brake kleen as well. I went through two soft wire brushes getting the checkering cleaned out. That finish coating that Remington uses is tough stuff. On the steel, I used 1000 grit emory cloth, and 00000 steel wool, with rubbing compound.

Very nice indeed! Guess that's where good old fashioned "elbow grease" really shines...pun intended.

With that clean barrel it looks great. Even the large objective accents the clean lines...........just one fine looking auto
I'll get started on my 870, using some of your methods, over the holidays.

Thanks,
Doug

I wish you the best of luck. I'm sure you'll do fine. If you have questions, please ask. I'll be happy to provide any insight. Brandon may also have some ideas too.
