I have a Zeiss 3x9x40 Conquest on a Model 70 7-08, and it has a bad case of what I think is paralax. As I move my head, the crosshairs (point of impact ) move as well. This is the only scope I have that does this. I have a Burris 4x16, as well as a Leupold Vari-X 2. What can I do about it?

Someone please help me. Can this be repaired, or how do I overcome this problem? Thanks, Z-28

I saw it at 100 yds @9 power. My buddy saw the same thing. My Burris Sig 4-16 doesn't do this at all

Cheek weld matters folks, some will tell you different, but you need to have your head in the same spot ever time. The stock on the rifle probably doesn't fit you well, try getting a cheek piece and practice getting behind the rifle solid ever time. Just my .02 cents.

What you are experiencing is parralax error. On a scope without an Adjustable Objective or side focus, the scope is focused at a set distance by the factory. This distance is normally between 100 and 150 yds.
All fixed focus scopes have a parralax error. They may not all show it at the same distance, but each one will have it, as it is a law of optics and lenses.
Try testing the scope at various distances from 50 yds out to 200 yds and see if you can find a distance where no parralax occurs.
Through improper cheekweld, a different sight picture will be obtained from shot to shot, causing up to 1 inch at 100yds shift in impact if the parralax shift is observed as 78thou.
Likewise it will be 2 inch at 200yds, 3 inches at 300yds etc.
However, to do the correct calculation one must know at what distance the scope is parralax free, as that forms part of the equation.
The scope can be re-focussed by the manufacturer, so if it remains unacceptable to you, send it back and request that the scope be re-focussed to factory spec. Edited by 8shots - December/03/2009 at 06:31 |

If you have the Rapid Z Reticle in your Conquest, it will be parallax free at 200 yds with the exception of the Rapid Z 1000 that is sighted in at 500 yds. The manuals supplied have not been updated to include the specifications for the Rapid Z reticles.

Great info 3 tens. That would account for the parralax difference for the different brand of scopes as tested.
The thing is that if you shoot closer then the parralax free distance, 200yds in this case, then the maximum parralax cannot be more the 100% of the objective lens.
So one should not have an error greater then 40mm or 1 1/2 inch with the 40mm objective scope when shooting inside 200yds.
That is well inside minute of buck angle!!! Edited by 8shots - December/03/2009 at 09:00 |
