have I decided to put a scope on the .458 Lott after deliberating so long and taking the 4x I had on it off???????
1st day of season (gun season) in Alabama, today.  I was unable to hunt this morning due to a telecon for work, but hunted late this afternoon.  I was leaving the "field" and a deer walked out on the trail about 75yards away.  Of course, it was near last light.  I was unable to see the front sight post, so I raised the rifle up to the sky, got a picture and started to drop back down on the deer.  He walked off into the woods, it was darker than on the trail, and I could not make a shot that I would call safe or ethical.  Had my Pentax 4x been on the rifle, I would have had a deer "in the freezer", so to speak.  As much as I love open "iron" sights, scopes do provide certain advantages.  Would have been nice to be able to take that deer...

I am now deciding what scope I want to put on the Lott...

yeah, I like open sights and they are fast and fun, but when it comes to hunting I want to be able to clearly take shots in very low light
good luck!

Well, I can certainly vouch for a decent 4X making most low-light shots possible, even against a dark background. So I think it's a good move. I've hunted with my M1 before and it was fun, despite the weight. Iron sights are faster as long as the light conditions alllow it. In my case, I took a shot at a buck about 100 yards away and forgot I'd dialed in 300 yards of elevations to demonstrate to one of my friends that I could hunt without a scope. Fortunately the buck and several does stayed put long enough for me to figure out what I'd done.
Reaction time is a factor...

Dan, are you looking for a traditional 4x or something else?

Yes, it will be a fixed 4x, I think.  I am interested in the IOR hunting 4x and the Conquest 4x.  If I get one, it has to be "worthy".  Now, don't get me wrong, I LIKED the Pentax, but I think I destroyed it.  I was practicing 'quick acquisition' from a shoulder carry with the .458 winmag, hit a door frame with the elevation turret and pretty much broke it loose.  They don't call me "El Destructo" for nothing...  Since then, I have had some zero problems that I have not ironed out, yet.  Not enough shooting to tell if it is the scope or the rifle.  The WinMag is not as accurate as the Lott and I was trying some new ammo, so it was too many variables to tell.  I don't think the ammo was at fault, so it has to be the rifle or the scope.  The Pentax Gameseeker 4x is no longer made...

I really like the 4x Conquest a lot!!! I've played with one and will eventually have one of my own someday. Not sure though how it'll hold up mounted on your canon. Big Smile
