Can anyone with experience with the 35 Whelen tell me what loads, factory or handloads stop game of 400 lbs. or less the fastest? I do not care about meat being ruined I just want the animal dead with little or no tracking. A bullet with a good b.c. would be perfered but a fast stop is most important. I know shot placement is important and I am talking about good body shots in the lungs.Chest or shoulder shots that go through the lungs are where I want quick results and a large wound channel. Possible bullets are 225 nosler either accubond or partition, 200 gr. hornady spire, 225 trophy bonded, 225 sierra, 200 remington factory load or 250 factory load or the 250 speer grand slam or spitzer. I know a spine shot kills instantly but that is not always possible so I am looking for a fast kill when the brain or spine is not hit. Any bullet is ok as long as it does the job.

I have used the 225gr sierra with success.  It's a fairly soft bullet, perfect for deer sized game, its accurate and inexpensive.  I've had good success loading this bullet with R15.

I would think any of the lighter weight cup + core bullets in that caliber would work well.

lucytuma. thanks, I will give the sierras a try. That bullet has a high b.c. that I like. 300S&W, thanks for your good advice. My Whelen is a Rem. 7600 pump with a 22 inch barrel. It  weighs 7.5 lbs. with the 2.5 Leupold scope on it. When you shoot it with a full power load the recoil actually works the action for you. It is almost as fast as an automatic for aimed shots. It will shoot a 5 shot group of 1.5 inches at 100 yards from a bench rest with a load it likes.

I loaded the 200g Barnes XFB in mine and had outstanding results on deer and hogs.  I still have some 225g Ballitsic Tips I have yet to kill anything with.  I have heard not so good things about the Sierras in Whelens (supposedly too soft) but don't know first hand.  I was thinking of trying some in my Pre '81 BLR .358 Win. since it is somewhat slower than the Whelen.

The Sierras are soft, but perfect for deer sized game.

I know you'll hate this but I've taken a few deer with the 35Whelen using cast lead bullets. Out to 200 yds a 250gr LBT FN bullet at 2000-2100 fps performed better than most other calibers I've used or friends have used. The 450Marlin (also cast bullets) is the bestest I've used when it comes to "droponthespot" results. The Whelen leaves a blood trail a blind man could follow, (no disrespect intended) the 450 doesn't leave a trail. I understand your feelings for the 35, to bad more people haven't tried it.

+1 on 375H&H DRT! If you can get TSXs to shoot, they work real good. Get the heavy ones...

Along with the Sierra 225 the 200-grain Hornady Spire Point is a real quick deer killer in any .35 from the .358 Winchester up. The BC isn't much but you can start it fast enough that it still shoots real flat out to 300+ yards.

John Barsness, thanks. Hornady made a special run of ammo with the 200 spire at 2800 fps. for some hunters in the South were the 35 Whelen and 45-70 can be used during the muzzle loading season. That ammo or some full power loads with the 225 Sierra should work. The 200 TSX sounds good too. I love the 375 but they do not make it in a pump rifle.

I used the 35 Whelen for seveal years up here in Ontario , Canada for deer and moose..I have to say the 35 Whelen was the best calibre I ever used!.. I started out just using the factory 200 gr Rem PSP-CL bullets , and they worked perfectly... Never mind that they are "ballistic inferior" bullets , they just plain work great and put game down right now , even moose... I don't think you could go wrong with the 200 gr PSP factory loads , or a 200 gr PSP or RN reload....
The 35 Whelen is about the most under-rated and under-appreciated cartridge out there , it will do anything you want it to.

All the best

When I transitioned from a shotgun to a rifle the 1st rifle I ever had was a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem.  Back in the late 70' and early 80's it was all I ever needed as all our hunting land was wooded and fairly thick.  As logging and a new High Line ROW intruded into our territory the shots got to be considerably longer than that old .35 had reach for.  I moved up toa .30-06 for a few years and it was OK I still own it.  It just didn't seem to have the "knock down" of my trusty .35.  Then I discovered the .35 Whelen.  Picked up a 700 Classic in the late 80's and that is one fine rifle.  The Whelen will do it all.  I load 200 g X Bullets and 225 g Nolsers.  Both have performed excellently.
