I'd sure like to do that someday- sounds like a fun, cheap hunt. And I'm a big fan of hunting things that are exceptionally good eating!
(...adds one more item to list of things to do before I get old and die!)

Axis is quite a popular game item in Texas, Florida and some other states. They are quite large, averaging about 250lb or so for mature bucks. My sister took one a few years ago, still in velvet, and it is one of the most magnificent mounts I have ever seen. Mine was a doe, better eating, but the buck was better than any deer or elk. You should try it. There are few hunting institutions in Texas that will let you take a doe for about $200. WELL worth the price...

I loved reading Jim Corbett''s adventures and recall that he often mentioned chital. I guess I didn't realize it was the same thing as an axis deer, even though I did know that axis were originally from India. Quite a few ranches in Texas now have them, I believe. |

Axis is from India imported to the U.S... Common name in India is chital. Pretty large and the meat is some of the best you will ever taste. They are grazers, not browsers...

Cousin shot this Axis off our family ranch.
He flew in from Colorado Friday night, didn't go on the morning Saturday hunt, came out Saturday for the afternoon hunt, didn't have a tree stand, decided to hunt in a different spot that he usually does, climbs into a random tree that he thought looked good, waited 30 mins and shot him 20 yards away with his bow. Hunting made easy. He said he was with 5 other bucks just like him. I know where I'm hunting next week
He was also nice enough to let me get some ribs off him
